<Answered> Best RSS Feed Reader?
« on: March 14, 2013, 09:18:11 AM »
With the pending death of Google Reader I was wondering which of the RSS feed readers would be best and easiest. I see several in the repos or would an online service be better? Which is easiest to import my Google Reader data into?

I would recommend RSSOwl but it requires Java 1.5
Liferea is also very good and can sync with Google Reader.

Since I got Kontact working with email, calendar and contacts, I've integrated Akregator and it suits me just fine.

Just tried akregator and not impressed. So far Liferea is best though really just okay. RSSOwl looks most promising but it appears to be broke. Not just Java but something with the browser that requires fixing beyond my skill level from what I have read of the fixes in their own Help Faq.

what features/behaviors in an rss reader would impress you? or what feature are you looking for in an rss reader?

That"s probably part of the problem. :) I'm not sure but I'll know it if I see it. Basically I'm use to Google Reader.

Liferea is good except I haven't found a way to adjust the RSS display font default size to one I can read. Sure I can hit plus but I'd like a permanent solution. Maybe it's there and I haven't found it. Menu fonts and such are fine, probably because I already use custom GTK fonts but that doesn't seem to affect the browser display.

Second problem there seems to be no way to display all the articles in a feed so I can just scroll through them. Instead I have to click on them one at a time.

Akregator the display with the tree view on the left is just more cluttered then I like. Reminds me of a Usenet reader and I always disliked that in them. I use to use Xnews because I could configure it to single pane.

Now if someone could tell me in steps I could understand how to fix the error message "RSSOwl was unable to create a browser for reading news" I'd be glad to try it. It looks promising.... if it worked.

Firefox add-ons again :

Sage
Brief
NewsFox

I like Google Reader the best cause it's easy to save the pictures.

This won't help you right now but there will an RSS/Atom for ownCloud (News app)  sometime before Google Reader is shutdown on the 1-July.

Yes, a reason I hadn't mentioned.

I have grown to like Chrome and can't see using Firefox just for an RSS reader.

+1

I find Akregator does all I need and it's very easy, and reliable, at adding feeds into my other PCLinuxOS systems

Recently put KDE mini on a flash drive, first time in several years.
Runs and looks great, better even.

Question is, does Akregator show the pictures in RSS feeds, and can
you save those pictures in reasonable form.   The original or older one
could not.

thx

I found Akregator confusing, unusual for a KDE product. Was stuck on a link leading me to the site of one of the feeds and couldn't seem to get it back to normal. Got to the point I ended up stuck by trying to save an image.

One thing I notice is all of them come with a bunch of garbage, links to places I'm not interested in. I just want a blank slate and I will fill it in.

Tried one on line one and after jumping through hoops to register got a message that the free version was too popular and had been suspended. Wanted me to cough up my CC for the pay version. Talk about a scam.

Tried a windows app RSS reader in Wine and froze the computer so bad even Xkill didn't work. I had to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

Sure hope Google changes their mind.
