Terminal codes? [Solved]
« on: March 13, 2013, 07:32:56 PM »
Is there a nifty place or something i can learn about terminal codes??

like this for example
rpm -qa --qf '%{NAME}\t\tinstall\n' | sort > ~/installed-packages.txt

i see a lot on the forums people use terminal left and right and unless they put what code to write or copy paste i am lost like a 5 year old at Wallyworld :/

Well, you have a good example there.
Personally, I keep files with examples of every terminal command that attracts my interest.
I usually open a terminal window & try out new ones I come across. I learn alot that way.
There are plenty of sources for terminal commands. You can find plenty by a forum search.  ;)
There are some threads of users sharing their favorites.
There is such an overwhelming amount of cli commands, that I gave up those studies. I find them in context right here, from real-life examples.
Your learning style may vary.  ;D
Try that forum search.  ;)
(search; command line, bash commands)
here's one  ;D

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

Why, any 5 year old child could understand this.
Somebody bring me a 5 year old.

You can google for 'cheat sheets linux' and grab what pop's up, i.e.

http://fosswire.com/post/2007/08/unixlinux-command-cheat-sheet/

good way to start terminal'ing :-)

If you posses the intelligence to ponder such a question, you surely must posses the intelligence to Google it.

If you are having a problem, please state it's nature and the conditions under which it exists.

We are all here to help those in need of help.

None of us are here to answer a bunch of loaded questions.  ;)  ;D

Just to add to the knowledge that other members previously provided...

If you are interested in learning more about the Linux command line in general, I would suggest a great e-book which is free for download and contains pretty much everything you would like to know:

http://linuxcommand.org/

Beyond that, there are the man (manual) pages for almost every command line program.

For example, if you would like to know more about rpm and its usage, hit man rpm in terminal.

You can also find man pages over the Internet.

Some helpful links:
