How to set up USB access in VB??? [SOLVED]
« on: March 13, 2013, 04:23:05 PM »
I just installed Oracle's Virtual Box, when i open it is says that i need to update it and to be able to use USB i have to add  the user to "Vboxusers" how exactly do i do that??

It also says i should update VB, when i run synaptic it doesn't show that there is a more updated version, is there a way out side of synaptic i can update it or just leave it as is??

How did you install Virtualbox?  Did you use install get-virtualbox script from Synaptic, then run it from the menu?  Or did you download it directly from Oracle's site?

How, exactly, did you install it?

VirtualBox and LibreOffice are a little exceptional in how they are handled in PCLOS (one due to licensing, the other due to size).
When you update Synaptic, it just updates a script that does the installation / upgrading for you.  In the case of VirtualBox, run the "getvirtualbox" script (under More Applications > Emulators > Get Oracle Virtualbox).  This script will also handle getting and installing the "Extension Pack", which is what allows USB, amongst other things.
The "tricky" part comes when you update...keep an eye open for updates to the script(s), and after it all done, you have to (re-)run the scripts to get the actual updated program.

Is it asking you to update VBox, install the extension pack, or to update the guest additions to the current version? (You have to do the latter with each VM you create, from within the running guest VM, each time you upgrade VBox.)

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

I installed it off of Synaptic typing "oracle" after that i went and clicked on get oracle VM Virtual Box

After i created the Virtual  Machine i went to setting and there it prompted me to add this to vboxusers so that i can use usb and shortly after clicking okay another pop up shows that a newer version is available.

Please, go to Synaptic and check what version of getvirtualbox you have in your machine.
It should be 4.2.8-1pclos2013
Also check inside VirtualBox under Help-> About.
It should read 4.2.8 r83876

To add yourself in vboxusers go to

Configure Your Computer (PCC) -> System -> Manage Users on system -> Users
Double click on your user name. A new window will appear.
Go to the last tab which reads "Groups" and search for "vboxsf"

Check it and press OK.
Logout and then back in to enable the change.
