« on: March 11, 2013, 09:01:28 PM »
I've been using PCLinuxOS since probably the first version, have have been a forum viewer for many years, but have just observed. Now I'm retired, I have some time so here I am.
I'm a PC lover, I have rare working machines from PC XT's. thru 386's 486's, until I've lost count.
Mu current machine has a ASUS Rampage Extreme with the i-7 3820 Quad Core. I thought the hex cores were over kill and would generate more heat than I wanted. I have 16GB of Corsair Ram, a TB WD VelociRaptor HD, an Corsair 120Gb SSD
Current PC
ASUS Rampage Extreme IV MB, i7-3820 quad core @3.6Ghz, 3.8Ghz turbo. 16 Gb Corsair Dominator GT Ram @1600 Mhz , Corsair 120Gb SSD, WD VelociRaptor 1Tb, WD Black 1Tb
Silverstone TJ09 Aluminum Case, Corsair 1200AX PS
EVGA 680GTX SC+ metal back plate

Third attempt at Intoducing myself
« Reply #3 on: March 11, 2013, 10:23:39 PM »
Hi everyone in the PcLinuxOS community.I feel like a idiot because this is my third attempt at introducing myself because on the first two attempts I hit enter before I meant to send it, so I'm using kwrite to compose.
My name is John, and I'm 67 and now retired. I love PC's and have everything from a working PC XT, with rare math co to an 8 bit VGA card to a 386, 486 and I have lost track. They all get TLC from me and still work. My current machine is Intel 2011, i7 3820 Quad, 16GB Corsair Dominator ram and a EVGA 680GTX. I'm bragging maybe, but I love this stuff.
I've was schooled as a technician for the Old mainframes and picked up PC's on my own. My son is a Linux System Administrator and is responsible for me loving Linux. My current PC boots Windows 7, PCLinuxOS, two other Linux distros, and PC-BSD. I can't get enough. PCLinux is very well done and I'm glad the 64 bit version is almost here. BTW, my son is hard nosed, like his father and gives me very Little Linux help. "you're smart enough to figure it out on your own". I'm not any kind of Guru, Software or hardware; I'm just too tenacious to give up! Now that I have time, I'd like to participate in the community.
PS: I hunt and peck on the keyboard so bear with me. The son does 130WPM and I do envy that. The one thing we agree on is the superiority of the K Desktop Environment.

jberkpc,

A warm welcome to you, young fellow, from New Zealand.
I am 6 years older than you are. You have arrived at the right place here in this forum. Now, sit back and enjoy.

Check out the PCLinuxOS on-line magazine. Interesting information and ideas are just an easy pdf download away.

Welcome, jberkpc and have a nice stay!

Hope I'll be able to use Linux when I reach your age...

My parents and grand-parents never had computers, never learned to use them and -probably- never will.
So I can't possibly imagine someone at your age (or older) using a computer because I've never seen it inside my family.
I feel the same way about other forum members who are 60+. I'm proud of you guys!
Wish my dad had the same knowledge or will to learn.
He and my mom live away from us. I tried to convince him to start using a computer, mainly for communication.
I offered my help but I guess it must be difficult for him to start using it at this age (he's 63).
Especially since he had no previous computer experience.

I, as a kid, had some encounters with machines of my time but never really used them until I was 17.
My kids are 5 and 7 now, and they have their own desktop computer.
So, I guess, when my kids reach my age, I will be a happy 60+ PCLinuxOS user.
And my kids will not find it strange... :)
For the whole world, you are someone.
For someone, you are the whole world.
