Have you tried the safe graphics option?

And that solved the problem. Thanks, Phil.
So the first think I saw was "The KDE Crash Handler" telling me that "KDE Daemon Closed Unexpectedly." Not sure what any of that was about but I did try to report it as requested, no luck there as the info I provided wasn't adequate - it asked what I was doing before the crash and I said nothing, no surprise that my info wasn't up to spec.
Then I tried to alter the screen resolution, it's stuck on something like 1024 by 768 which in all honesty looks awful, but after re-booting as requested it stayed the same. Tried to change the graphics card settings, but my one, a Radeon HD 5670, isn't listed so I had no luck there either.
The OS itself looks pretty good but I need to be sure that I will be able to set up the graphics card and screen resolution before I think about using it as a replacement for Mint. The main reason for wanting to make the switch is I read that PCLinux can be customised to a greater extent than some of the other Linux OSs. I'm a big time Gimp user and so design and the way things look is something I spend a lot of time doing. Also I can't stop messing around with the desktop settings - which I think I've reached the limit of with Mint - and having a general rummage around with and changing conky files - great fun that is.
I think the big problem with all the Linux systems is that they offer so much. After moving over from windows I feel like I've stumbled on an Aladdin's cave of possibilities, and I'm not sure if I'll ever be content to stick with what I've been given again, but it's good to feel that way.
Anyways I'll have to see if I can solve the resolution problems before moving on.

When setting up a graphic card in a live session, you need only to log out, and back in, to see the result of the new settings. If you reboot, everything is lost, as everything exists only in memory in a live session. One can't write to a read only burned disk.

In an installed system, the settings will survive a reboot, because everything is saved to the hard drive.

We need to know what monitor are you using - is it a CRT or LCD and what is its recommended resolution (for an LCD it is the listed resolution and for CRT the optimum resolution would be lower than the maximum capable one)

To select the correct video driver for your card, please open PCLinuxOS Control Centre > Hardware > Configure Graphics > Configure Video Card.
Then click on the Graphic Card list and select Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeon/fglrx) and click OK.
Then set Monitor according to your monitor type and resolution. (sometimes the specific model would be listed and if not found use Generic)
Resolution to Auto
Click OK and select use Proprietary driver when prompted.
Now logout and login.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

Thanks guys, logging out and back in solved the resolution problem. I've set the resolution for my LCD monitor to 1280 by 1024 at 60hz  which is the same as the set-up in Mint and it looks a hell of a lot better now. There is a setting listed for a flat panel at the same size but to be honest I don't know if I should use that setting so I left it alone. Btw my monitor is listed as a NCI 17".
So far I'm impressed with PCLinux, but there's some changes that I will want to make so I'll do some checking around before diving in. So far I've found out that I'll be able to change the menu bar colour, which is one of the things that I'm not too keen on in Mint, but I'll want to keep the window buttons that I use in Mint - they're the windows vista type, some things are so hard to let go off. After that I guess I'll just play around until I find a set-up I like...and then change it some more.
