PCLOS saves the day!
« on: March 11, 2013, 02:11:22 PM »
On a part-time basis I operate a professional sound system at the church I attend.  Recently, I was working on a project with a performing arts group, that was to perform at the church.

A small team of performers from out of town was to join our local group for the big event.  Upon their arrival, one of them handed me a usb stick, which contained their music. Also given to me was a list of their skits and the names of the songs in chronological order.

Our multimedia booth has two MS-based computers.  Once I arrived in the booth, I fired up one of the towers.  After inserting the stick, I waited for the tower to acknowledge the drive.  Ain't happening!  So I inserted one of my sticks in a nearby port.  Mine was acknowledged.  So I decided to repeat the process on the other tower.  Same results.

Then I remembered I had brought my PCLOS-based (LXDE 2012.01) netbook to the church. I figured why not.

After boot up, I inserted their stick, Moments later, PCLOS acknowledge the stick!  I copied the music to another stick, and immediately returned the other stick to its rightful owner.  I explained my situation to him, then he told me that the stick had been formatted in Apple!  Obviously MS doesn't like Apple.

Had it not been for my netbook in my back pack, their part of the rehearsal would not have happened. A wasted trip of 40 miles(one-way) was avoided thanks to PCLOS!

Good Job !  ;D
There is a 5th dimension, beyond that which is known to man.It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity, between science& superstition,& it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call PCLINUXOS!

Next step is to get rid of Windows on those two machines and install PCLinuxOS on them! ;)

That would be wonderful, except if alex25502 church uses a particular worship display software that are Windoze only.  :-\

But then again, he can use wine, Crossover or a virtual machine in order to use it.  :)

Good story; wasn't aware Apple formatted USB drives were incompatible with MS. Generally I just format to Fat32 which seems to happily run on most OS's I come in contact with, which are mainly Linux or MS.

Lucky you had;

I found too on a usb stick that the only way to get full capacity back was to clear it thru linux. Windows sucks, Windows will dump all the info for you, you can try via windows to open it up to full capacity but it will not do it. As for windows 8 I fell sorry for folks that just have to have it. I read a report thu a source where samaung CEO's are not impressed at all with it.

"wasn't aware Apple formatted USB drives were incompatible with MS"

maybe it wasn't doing a incompatible format process, maybe it just did it wrong and windows didn't liked it

linux does things different, tends to respect standards i think, that is what makes the difference

Yep, windows can be a bit grumpy when presented with simple procedures.  ;D

To just see in PCC > Local Disks> Manage Disk Partitions the array of filesystems available to format a drive to, is something quite awesome to behold, as far as I'm concerned, most of which I haven't heard of.  :D

*Back to Windows, and they have a whole town, Redmond, full of Tech heads. I recently was reading; with so many people involved in the construction of Software modules there's a lot of duplication of code, and stupid practices occur to get the 'Job done'. I know it's a lame excuse, but kinda makes sense, "Too many cooks, ..."

When compared to a Distro like PCLOS, and the handful of people constructing it, the end result is hard to compare to a crazy windows OS. Just a thought,... ;)

You're most likely right µT6.

I've been really enjoying PCLinuxOS lately, I'm finding when I break something i can figure what I did wrong, and fix it without a big song and dance. Plus personalising your own individual 'look, and feel', customising performance to your own needs, is a nice feeling.

I'm no expert by any stretch, but a great part of computing is that it is logical, and I generally feel confident with that being the answer in fixing a minor to medium problem. Use your logic.  ;)

the only pro in windows pro is the word pro

other than that, the oem starter is exactly the same but without the multimedia apps and other crap nobody uses
