Geforce 4 cards

PCL 2013 / KDE4

Are AGP Geforce 4 cards to old for PCL 2013?

I plugged one in to my Athlon 2500+ motherboard board and tried a live DVD boot but the graphics server was unable to start.

what exact model?

a mx440?  a geforce 4000?

nvidia tends to support their video cards for alot longer than amd so probably still supported with the right driver from synaptic

maybe the question would be if it is still a good idea to keep using it and what kind of use you want to give to it under kd4?

if light effects and normal usage like flash videos, 720p videos and some casual games, probably will be just fine

it all depends on the specific model and if the driver still exist for it

now, about the livecd and the problems, you could be a bit more specific about the problem and maybe we could try to force it to load a vesa driver to load gui and from there load another nvidia driver

Thanks for that, apologies for the lack of information.

Its an MX440 card.

I don't have a bells and whistles desktop - one desktop and the most extensive graphics is Youtube.

I'll try vesa as you suggest.

Looking on ebay, there's a Geforce 6200 card which the seller has confirmed as being the older PCI type.

Can I assume PCI graphics cards are workable with PCL 2013?

Thanks

well, you asked for one video card, now you are asking for another on pci port

maybe you could tell us what you want to do so a good advice can be done?

start by saying if you want to install a old card you have around, or want to buy one

if your mainboard has agp ports or pci - express ports, or if it is a very old mainboard without a agp port and will only let you put a old pci video card

Apologies for going off at a tangent. Just had seen the PCI card (not PCI-E) on ebay and was curious about it.

My posting is focused on the MX440 AGP card.

I try with vesa and see how I get on.

gforce mx440 is really very old, we are talking of 12 more or less

you will need to do some config under kde4 to make it work, probably will work but it is on the limit now

it should use the driver 96 but not sure if it still exist on repo or you have to use nv driver because driver for nvidia doesn't work anymore

That is correct.  It should be supported by the nvidia96xx driver which is still in the repo and would be configured by selecting "GeForce 2 MX to GeForce 4" in PCC and answering "yes" when prompted to use the proprietary driver.

Having said that, I am not sure if this driver works with kernel 3.2 and later.  It would be interesting to know  ;)

I've got one of these in storage, but it is in another city ... I can't test right now. ;)
