Actually nobody seems to have addressed the OP description of the main issue (not the updating which has been well covered) -

- Cups is installed but "Add" is greyed out.  Thus what printers are present is irrelevant - and I know that all my printers are covered out of the box (mind you I thought that about graphic cards!) except for the Brother 3-in-1 for which drivers are available.  All the rest of this is about updating 2010 (and my unforgivable tardiness) because I wanted to repair Cups but the repos no longer support 2010.

rastus, thank you for your PM and links.  I may look into it and try to understand it (but too late to salvage 2010!).  However, I am so disillusioned about this and my other current thread, that I'm inclined to abandon PCLos, perhaps testing 'til they break then use the partitions to experiment with more promising distros..

do you still have that old install outdated working?

we already said that if it is outdated and can't be updated, the problem you are experiencing can't be solved and you should use a new iso to keep using pclinux

the possible reason for the printer module to be greyed out could be a update that broke that module on your install, can' remember if we experienced or not such problem in 2010, 3 years is too much time to remember problems with a printer module, specially when i stopped using printers since 2009

if you can't install a new iso or you have problems installing it, you should open a new post, writing what iso you are using, from where you downloaded it, if you ran md5checksum and what hardware you have, explaining the possible problems related to that new install

it is time to stop beating this poor dead horse, it won't print anymore

That is a problem I had and could only solve with a re-install.
Where does that graying-out come from?  Beats me, but it is probably from doing something illegal when trying to install.  The only solution I know is a re-install from a new ISO.

(This can be tiresome but less so if you have saved your settings in the 'home' folder on a 'Data' partition which you do not re-format during the install.   -There is a very good post by Old Pollack on this.)

PCC > System services, is Cups set active ?
Try to run Cups as root.

Thanks DeBaas - as simple as that!

For some strange reason Cups was not set to start at boot (perhaps a consequence of the failed attempted to update 2010 via SPM...!!!!).

[PS How do I add to your "Thanks" score?  OK found that too!]

[PPS And also thanks to Webt for refocusing the thread!]
