A more knowledgeable person will no doubt go into detail but the majority of "error" messages synaptic throws up could be better described as "information". I ignore all mine. But don't curse me if things go wrong.

Synaptic is a very stable package manager. These messagess are in fact errors. When downloading anything from a repo there should be no "extra output". It should install cleanly. Extra output shows (a) potential problem(s) with the packages or the repo. The issue is not a worry thaat things will go wrong but just that some of the data may be corrupted in some way.

There are only 2 errors in the output. The rest are informational warnings.

/usr/games/simutrans: cpio: rename failed - Is a directory

and

ERROR: fopen(/etc/capi.conf,r) failed - No such file or directory

I reported these messages in the testing section last month

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,113368.0.html

I now see capifs errors during each boot .....  I have no idea what capi is for, but I only noticed those during booting from a 3.2.18 kernel .....  and something about the use of 'Capi' in one place and 'capi' in another.

I know nothing of  simutrans

The errors that refer to foo/bar foo2/bar can be ignored .....  something slipped through that should not have I suppose, and just needs cleaning up when someone has time.

The capi error comes from isdn4k-utils package. I don't know anyone who still uses isdn. It was a short lived protocol that came out before DSL. I suspect the isdn packages can be depreciated provided there is no other rpm dependencies.

The simutrans error usually indicates an executable is trying to install in the same location as the name of a folder so it needs to be fixed at some point.

Ekiga brings in the isdn packages :(

As Texstar said, these messages are mostly not errors and those that are relate to specific packages. Linux can be verbose at times, because at its heart it's built by developers for developers, who can sometimes find this information interesting (and even, possibly, useful)! Although pclos tries to be  more friendly it still relies on the underlying system, and sometimes these messages contain useful information such as where a configuration file has gone in an upgrade.

Some of these messages (the ones labelled as errors) indicate small packaging bugs. Someone appears to have used foo/bar as a place holder intending to look up a mime type later and then forgotten - but they are unlikely to cause serious problems or they'd have been picked up in testing.

Yes.  I just came across this during an update as well.

APT system reports:
%% 100.000000
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/games/simutrans: cpio: rename failed - Is a directory
W: Some errors occurred while running transaction

I just right clicked and selected   'complete removal'  as I am not using it anyway.

No more error messages now  :-)

Well the OP had the issue,   'While installing package simutrans-112.1-1pclos2013:

error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/games/simutrans: cpio: rename failed - Is a directory'

as did I per my report.

But do remember, this was during a synaptic update.

You are doing an install, not an update.

Had the same error messages you did. So I selected complete removal then installed the updated version 112.1 Installed without error and works perfectly now. Synaptic reports no updates available and simutrans 112.1 is installed and working.
