[Solved] LiveDVD No Grub Menu
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:42:39 PM »
I cannot get the grub menu to load on the 2013.02 live dvd from my work PC.  All I see is the grub background with the PCLOS logo, but nothing else.  Any ideas on what may be wrong?  I've verified the md5 sum of the disc is correct and it does boot just fine within virtualbox.

In case it matters, the machine is a dell optiplex 755 with an add-on ATI video card for dual monitor support but otherwise stock.

Check your BIOS if the primairy video is set to PCI or AGP, try to change the settings.

While on GRUB hit ESC. Do you get a warning about entering text mode?
If yes, hit OK and you will be on a prompt that reads boot:

Type: vmlinuz livecd=livecd initrd=initrd.gz root=/dev/rd/3 acpi=on vga=788 keyb=us vmalloc=256M nokmsboot splash=silent
and hit Enter

See if the LiveCD continues booting...

I'm not sure on the cause, but the most likely candidate at this point is an optical drive issue.  If I waited long enough, sometimes it would load the menu after about 5 minutes, other times it would display an error message, other times it would fail to find vmlinuz after getting past the grub menu and drop me to the boot prompt.  After much patience, I was able to get it to boot up all the way on the LiveDVD and install.

Thanks for your help

If it is indeed a failure to read the optical disc correctly, I would have worries about an install using the same hardware ......   :(

You might consider creating a LiveUSB (while in the installed OS) and install again from that if possible.
