Does the drive have some kind of product code on it?
We can search that code and see for sure what kind of drive it is...

A product code would be the ideal soulution, though it seems it's a SATA drive (see agmg's earlier pic). Do any of the thingies look like that?

Seems to be a SATA II hard drive.
So, in my pic, the right connector is the one in the right.

SATA II cables are supplied with the motherboard.
Probably you use one of them for your disk. Is your computer new?
Check the connection of your current disk, see where it gets connected and search for a similar cable.
You may have to dig up your motherboard's box... :)

ok, i give.

this desktop unit was given to me, there is no motherboard  box.
I respectfully request to disengage from the problem of the 2nd, damaged HDD, I have another issue that I feel is more upsetting...i've found a windows program that I downloaded to linux and don't know what to do with it now...it's an exe. and if i was anywhere but linux, i could handle it, here is what i see on dolphin:  7zip_installer_d793026.exe

it's supposed to be a version of windows 7 that I can install ...but i can't...

Or not...

I would be wary of the file, and possibly its source...

It's an installer for the 7zip compression/extraction application, not Windows 7. Even if it is not a virus laden package, (not knowing the source) you don't need it; the p7zip package from the repository will give you a native Linux version of 7zip.

Just a quick note:
Quote
"...it's supposed to be a version of windows 7 that I can install ...but i can't..."

Try to get your head around the fact that you said, "It's supposed to be"; meaning you don't have any idea in reality what you have. That's Dangerous.

Secondly; "a version of windows 7". Not a great idea to trust an anonymous source to give you a version of Win7. That's Dangerous.

Thirdly: "...that I can install ...but i can't..." -- Linux doesn't use Windows.'exe' files as your familiar with in Win.
So a few lessons learnt, and damage, carnage, or a big fine averted.  ;D  :D
