Mini 64?
« on: March 04, 2013, 05:59:51 PM »
After a (now recovered) crash I started a new Mini on another partion. The crash made me want a fresh new install. but now I'm wondering if I should wait for a 64 bit version. Can't say I see much difference in how the 2 options work. Any advice?

According to the 64bitRC1 announcement the 64bit MiniMe will be available after the 64bit final is offered.
Not sure what you mean by this;
Can't say I see much difference in how the 2 options work. Any advice?
So can't advise.  ;D

I suggest not to wait for a MiniMe 64 version.
I guess 1st a full KDE4 iso gonna be released.

The 64 bit repository is not fully populated yet, some fixes are needed,  ect...

But the decision to you!  :)

johnmart, I was trying to ask if the difference between a 64bit and 32bit install, with 4gig of memory is worth waiting for. I have a 64 bit pclos partition and a new 32 bit one and don't see much of any difference in performance between the two.

+1 what they said.
I always install a minime version, so my install is just what I need. Nothing very special, but I only need a fraction of what's in the regular iso.
My machine is 64bit, the 64bitPCLOS is designed for it, so no reason to use the 32bit. IMO
For me the only noticeable diff is a snappier desktop response.
Plus, I suspect that the future is with 64bit.
32bit will eventually be Legacy, rt?  ;)

No, the difference is not worth waiting for.  ;)

Right. Get a working system now.
Start a time-consuming project. After awhile......
Install 64bit of your choice.  ;D

One difference I find in favour of the KDE 64bit RC1  (and actually Test4 and Test5) over the KDE 32bit release is in my Virtualbox use. I find it quicker and it doesn't seem to "weigh down" the host system as much.

Wasn't 64 bit made for multi core computers? 32 bit runs on multi, but 64 bit flies or am
I wrong.

Early 64 bit processors were mostly slower single core units, and the 64 bit system runs fine on them. Later 64 bit processors are faster and mostly multi core, (2 to 8 cores) and the 64 bit system is equipped to handle them as well. 64 bit processors, single or multi core, will run either 32 bit or 64 bit code, while 32 bit processors will only run 32 bit code.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

64 bit? if you want speed in your machine buy an SSD, for me PCLOS 32 bit is good enough.

For me the criteria is not really speed.
1. It is custom built to fit my system.
2. It will probably work better.
3. Built & maintained by very, very smart people.
4. Good enough for me.

Hmmm....except it is 32bit.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking 32bit at all.
I'm promoting 64bit.
It has been a long time coming, at tremendous effort.
It's my way of saying thanks.  ;)

64 bit is a general pressure every time someone writes a review, I know people is making a big effort but the current version fill my computer needs.
