PLC2013 / KDE4

I found myself a good Radeon 9200SE card to install.

Which drivers do I should I install from the repositories?

9200SE no longer supported by the fglrx AMD/ATI driver.
Sold from 2003 to february 2007
ATI Radeon X1950 and earlier
is probably the one you need and as far as I know already automaticly installed on your system.
So do not expect to much 3D experience.

I see, many people use ATI 9200 SE  ;D , I also.
But this is true , This card is not supported for ATI and Mesa, ( drivers exist, but are old )
but you can  use 3D Mesa

AnrzejL once wrote something about ati IRC channel to post there in case of problems.
You would have to look for information online here, or ask him personally.

After this 3D will be work.
This 3D is not perfect, For me something working wrong or not support

-  I tested other app.  on-line other app. and ...  Graphic operations 58 FPS Linux, 66 FPS Windows
so this work ok, but when I open game Red Eclipse I have only about Lin 37 max - Win 130 max FPS ( on the wall),
and this is game for Linux and Windows , so something is wrong.
This can be problem with driver or this game is built a little differently on the two systems.
-  In SuperTux Kart I don't see texture car when is the end of the race and turn on animation,
but maybe this is only bug i game.  :-X

I use LXDE, KDE work too fine. If you have problem with font, this s problem with driver, but I'm not sure , - I have this in KDE , LXDE

before i migrated it to a xp machine that had a dead video card, the only driver i could use was that one, x1950 and earlier, it had problems with 3d and i could run some kde4 desktop effects with limited success

the other driver is vesa but that one has no 3d support

other than that, time to replace that ancient agp card

The whole computer   ;D ,   this card is has little memory and does not support a number of new technologies, to play bad, but the office does not make a difference.

the only solution in this case, where the mainboard has agp only is find a newer supported agp card

it is still possible to find nvidia 6200 agp, also there is old ati radeons newer than the one you have, i think there was a ati radeon hd4650

of course that it is hard to find some of those but have a hardware that is not 10 years old and still is supported, is something good for you if you plan on using that pc for a couple more years

I did as DeBaas suggested (many thanks) and installed the card, booted and all is well.

I don't make use of multiple desktops and special effects so that's probably why the card is adequate for me.

The Geforce 6200 card I was using is now in my non-internet XP PC which also had a Geforce 6200 that suddenly died and seems to have damaged the NTFS file system in the process - very strange!!

ntfs is easier to damage than most people think

sometimes it is not ntfs itself, it is the ide or sata cable that suddenly fails

sometimes it is the psu that killed the video card and is causing problems to the mainboard and causing errors when writing/reading to the hard disk

that ati 9200 can do some basic desktop effect under kde4, you have to set it to xrender under the effects menu on the advanced tab in compositing type option

on some situations it held the system to give a smoother response, you can test it and disable most effects except a couple that you could find effective
