How NOT to strop your knife.
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:41:50 PM »
Anyone should feel safe using a Honing steel or a stroke or three on a 6000 grit stone to maintain your knife's edge.

However, if you plan on truly sharpening your knife, you must learn to use a strop.

A strop is simply any piece of bare leather, you can look it up. ;)

Recently I was stropping, for the fist time, a knife that has a "DLC" coating on it. (DLC stands for "Diamond Like Coating")

I guess I held the knife a bit shallow. Who would have guessed that a strop could do this much damage.  ???

It would appear their "Diamond Like Coating" is none to diamond like.
Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

Any coating is going to scratch, eventually.

This "DLC" coating is supposed to be one of the best.  ???

The "coating" idea was originally meant to eliminate the reflective quality's of a knife when struck by light.

This is important during covert military operations because anything reflecting light could tip off a strategic location.

It's aesthetic qualities however, bled over into the public and now, every knife company on the planet is offering high quality knives with this coating on it.

Personally, I don't like these coatings but some knives you simply can't get without the coating.

My Cryo is a perfect example. (The one in the picture)

Awesome knife, but it doesn't come without this gray "DLC".

My favorite finish on a knife is what's called "Stone Wash".   ;) ;D ;D
