KDE / Desktop Locks up (Freezes) caused by Flash
« on: March 01, 2013, 05:16:08 PM »
This has been an issue or me for several months, about the time I upgraded to PCLOS 2013 (I'm not pointing any fingers).

Using Firefox, with 6+ plus tabs open simultaneously, most using Flash version 11,2,202,270.  Firefox 19.0.

The system interrupts lock up tight. The Num-Loc key will need 500 msecs (or more) to change the led, the mouse pointer will not move smoothly, and sometimes will not change windows, and certainly will not activate anything.

I normally keep System Monitor loaded, Plugin_container will be the culprit stealing the most cycles.  By using the Num-lock key and the mouse to shake up the interrupts, after minutes I am able to End-Process Plugin-Container, which kills Flash and will free up the interrupts - I get my system back.  Reset (reload) the FF Tabs that were running Flash and I'm back in business until the next time.

Since this problem occurred, I nixed the onboard nVidia and replaced with an PCIe ATI board, eliminating the possibility that the nVidia drivers were the issue and (to some degree) memory as the ATI card has its own memory.

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

How much system memory do you have? I've had the same issue with flash, occasionally. My system with only 512mb ram, it happens very often. But, my system with 1gb ram, it only happens rarely. I don't think it has ever happened on my wife's machine with 4gb. (Life is not fair, I know. ;))

Is the problem occurring when any particular page or pages are loaded or loading?  I used to get the issue you describe when loading a particular Yahoo page, which I have stopped using since making the connection between loading the page and my system freezing.

Did you try the older flash:
flash-player-plugin11.1
Or maybe the, now in Synaptic:
google-chrome-stable
as alternate browser with build in (newer)flash, reader and so on.

Hi Guys...

I'll try to answer many of your questions here:

I have 2G system memory and 2G memory on the ATI Video card.  I have recently run extensive diagnostics for 7 hours straight without error (I know, this doesn't mean all is well - but there is nothing flagrant).

Yes, I have had the same issue with the previous version of Flash.

I have not tried Chrome, but I will - I really do like FF, especially the sync feature with my other machines.

I have 2 FF widows open, one that is a Radio streamer, the other has 8 tabs open, yahoo, gmail, hotmail, eBay... it appears to me that this problem occurs as I change tabs... I need to pay more attention to the actual occurrence.  Also, I normally have Thunderbird open, and may have a Kate, Kwrite, and even a LibreOffice window open when the issue occurs.

TIA

Pete

I've added Chrome which I have open on Desktop 2 with my radio streamer running.  I have FF open on Desktop 1 with 5 tabs open.

All is well at this time... I'll report back any issues.

Have a great week!
