Empathy - some plans for new version?
« on: February 26, 2013, 02:42:55 AM »
Hi,

I am using Kopete for years but many problems start to rise in past few months so I have to move on - also because Kopete is "dead" as a project (as I know).

As Pidgin is not what I need I started to use Empathy which is pretty similar to my beloved Kopete but version for PCLOS is extremely old and some things that I find to be fishy are already fixed and overall Empathy is much improved with latest version.

So, simple question - any plans to go up in near future?

Tnx and Best Regards!!!

Post a package update request in the appropriate section containing the necessary information and it could be attended to.

I notice the 3.7 release is dated this month so that would be good.

BTW ....  what does Empathy have that Pidgin lacks?
I use Pidgin but do not have empathy installed.

General look & feel - probably too similar to Kopete ;)

I created topic in Requested Package Updates - tnx for a tip Just17.

General look & feel - probably too similar to Kopete ;)

I installed it for a look ......  it offered to import accounts from Pidgin, which I thought was nice, so I agreed.

It imported ONLY the google accounts .....  not the yahoo accounts.

I could not add a Yahoo account ....  the number of protocols supported is VERY limited according to the choices I was given, so I could not add an account outside those choices either apparently.

Having imported two google accounts, neither would register .....  showing up in bright red ......  and no explanation why.

Closed out .....  back to pidgin. At least it allows me lots of different protocols, and from the little I saw there was no appreciable difference in the GUI appearance.
Kopete had lots of bling in comparison to either, but presently doesn't work here. It also had limitations when compared to Pidgin.

I can do without the bling ....  but anything I use must have as much functionality as Pidgin at minimum.

Now to go back and uninstall the dozen or so packages that empathy brought in with it.

.....  disappointing ......   :(

EDIT:
I installed Instantbird to try something else new to me .......  and it appears to be quite manageable and is directly related to Firefox it seems.
At least it does provide many protocols as does Pidgin.
It would take a little while to 'get into' it I suspect, but it does look promising from my point of view.

;)
