Adding Windows 7 To Existing XP and PCLINUXOS Dual Boot
(1/1)
freecicero:
Later this week I am going to attempt to add a Windows 7 Pro upgrade to my existing XP/PCLINUXOS dual-boot system on a Lenovo T61 laptop. I have PCLINUXOS totally up to date, and I am wondering if anyone has any advice or warning about what I might encounter.
I have a lot of space on an E: drive that I intend to copy to an external disk in anticipation of Windows 7 asking me to format that, but my question is really this: I would expect -- if I am lucky -- that Windows 7 will create its own boot menu that will allow me after install to boot to XP or 7. I suspect Windows 7 will not see my PCLINUXOS partition and leave that stranded without a boot entry.
If I am lucky enough to get to that point (a successful dual-boot of XP and 7) do I dare attempt to use my current PCLINUXOS CD and reinstall with the hope that PCLINUX will create a new Grub that will give me access to XP, PCLINUX, AND 7? That's the real question, as I don't want to try to delete my existing PCLINUXOS partition before installing Windows 7.
I can live with the loss of space if I never see PCLINUX on this laptop again, but I'd rather of course use the PCLINUXOS CD to reinstall (i gather I can't use it just to rebuild the MBR?) and get a working boot menu that has everything.
Any advice or tips would be appreciated as I would hate to blow this machine out of the water if I can help it.
THANKS

After doing the Windows installation, restoring grub to the MBR is as easy as this;
