Good new for you Phil! I managed to boot up the netbook. Here is what I did. I formated the flash disk with FAT32 option.
Then used Unetbootin 5.8.3 (this is the last version. use this since I had 5.8.1 and it did not work) to make it a live USB. Now plug it in and turn the device on. Hit F12 to choose boot device, and then choose the USB for boot. Now, this is importand and stupid!!!.
Keep hitting Enter key until you see the OS is booting (you will see texts printed on the screen). Leave the poor device alone and it will boot up now.

No luck here. Tried two usb thumb drives and a usb DVD. KDE 13.02 and LXDE 12.06. FAT32 and ext4. Tried the press the enter key (?????)
In all cases gets to "Disconnecting life support" and thats it.

I am using the latest unetbootin in synaptic which is not the version you mention.

I will wait a few months and try again with the next batch of isos and see if unetbootin gets updated.

I also tried with PClinuxOS Live USB Creator, same issues.

Phil, my problem is with hardware (most probably). So your's might be with hardware as well. And BTW, about that stupid "Enter" thing, you have to keep hitting it fast until the system boots up. Yes I know it seems I am an idiot, but believe me, I tried it more than enough to be sure. It works. It might be something else, but whatever it is, it is triggered this way. Anyways, I think the ISOs really need some modification.

Hi mmutoo,

I can get it to boot about half way for all attempts, then it just stops, the timer bar gets to the end and I give up.

I am sure it is something to do with the hardware. I have heard other "stupid" ideas to make things work, so gave yours a go. Sometimes they work.

I think I will wait for new kernels in the next isos and a new unetbootin. Mine is working fine mintified, except I prefer PClinuxOS.

I am amazed that most manufacturers have discontinued making these little machines. They have a purpose and work. I would not buy a more expensive ultrabook especially as they have a full price MS license.

Alex says he got his to work (different netbook thread) so it is possible.

See you in the sandbox,

Phil

Well, probably it does not worth the headache, and waiting for new ISOs would be the best solution. I hope it happens soon. I also have a another distro for now, but I like PCLOS for its rolling release feature. So I am going to wait like you :) Good luck.

I have acer aspire one 522.
I created live usb using pcllinuxos built in script (also tried unetbootin), tried two different usb sticks.
After grub there is a message :
Quote
Undefined Video Mode Number: 317. Press <Enter> to view available modes, <Space> to continue, or wait 30 secs.
I press space, the system continues to boot, KDE starts and that is it. It doesn't respond. Dead.

What could be the reason?
-tried to boot from this usb on my main machine - no probs.
Is my netbook not good enough to run KDE? - could be, but many people managed to run KDE on netbooks...

Will try to run Mint KDE, will also try with pclinuxos lxde.

It drives my crazy, I love PCLOS... :-(

Update:

Linux Mint KDE boots in less than 1 minute, everything works just fine...
Dear pclinuxos devs, please fix.

What image are you using to create the liveUSB?

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

brrp says: "I have acer aspire one 522" (Looks like AMD all the way through)

phil says: "I have acer aspire one 270" (Looks like intel all the way through)

Your post above O-Ps is what happens to me. Cannot get to a terminal to extract the messages. Mintified for the time being.
I also tried lxde 12.06 Clonezilla also runs fine to back up the system.

My Aspire One 522 is working fine now.

The problem I had , has nothing to do with a liveUSB or PCLINUXOS. I've wrote above, that linux mint worked fine. it's not true, it hanged to!
Every linux distro I tried, from USB, or after HDD installation, was hanging after maximum 5 minutes.
I found that:
http://www.linlap.com/acer_aspire_one_522

I found that the problem with those netbooks is common, there is an issue with the wired and wireless network adapters/drivers not getting initialized properly.

There is a weird work around for it, after I changed the boot list in bios and set to boot from lan as a first option, linux (any flavor) works fine, even with KDE...

In this case I've posted in the wrong place but maybe it can be useful for someone...
