Needs some advice.
I think I'm battling two issues here.

1 - is the irq thing with the usb drive. I added the 5 second delay to the grub menu.lst and I can clearly tell there is a delay, but I still get the errors.

2 - is sometime it does boot (with the irq errors) into a login screen and starts blinking and I can't login or type anything;  Or very rarely I can actually log into my desktop. (I keep messing with PCC or XFdrake and sometime it will go or not)  So far I have had to choose the kernel option from grub with safe settings to have any hope of getting a gui interface or access to the desktop.

I would try reinstalling with everything fresh.    New ISO, delete and reformat the Hitachi
before installation, you might overcome whatever glitch is on there or just decide some
hardware incompatibility exists with the Hitachi.

Reply 44 of the Hitachi thread has a command to add to the kernel line of
/boot/grub/menu.lst        You could try that once perchance.

irq is a memory area assignment a program or device uses.

It should work, a fresh reinstall of everything related to the Hitachi install
is what I would do.

Sometimes I reinstall Windows and I get a error because 32k of something
didn't get written, etc.,  but after two attempts it clears and the program
installs OK.

I tried a fresh install and updated the menu.lst with the waitusb=5: directly after the install. I am having better luck getting into my desktop using the main boot option from grub.

However, I have rebooted about 3 times and once I got the EXT4fs error that I was getting before. After a reboot it did not come back.

Then I rebooted a few more time and now it keeps crashing consistently and I am getting the EX4fs errors with can't load /etc/rc.modules or sysinint, The message keeps changing.

Thanks for trying to help.

BTW, I have not seen the IRQ errors since the re-install.

I was just reading some posts were the NVidia drivers will cause problems like
stalling, hanging up, etc., with the newer kernels still in development.

Even if you bought a new Seagate you'd probably still have trouble with NVidia
till the kernels get all the drivers in.

a forum search on the new kernel shows the 173 nvidia drivers had issues. i finially used the vesa driver as nu etc did not appear to work. this is fine for now and consisstent boots since xfdrake into vesa. the problem is i cant use google earth which is what i need to do right now as im trying to map out a mountain bike run with the exact coordinances to the specific trail lines. i am hoping to get this sanctioned as an international event eventually. i believe if i regress to an earlier kernel i can get the 3d to work for now.
anyway my guess is the same as yankee its the nvidia driver mucking things up but only a guess.

Whats the workaround for the geforce nvidia 6600? I think it was one of the xorg options from XFdrake, but was it nv or nuevoueo (spelling ??? ???)

Temporarily add the testing section in Synaptic, and click the Reload link. Search for ldetect-lst and mark the new one for installation/upgrade. Then search for dkms-nvidia and mark for installation only the dkms-nvidia304. Click Apply and Apply. When those two packages are installed, remove the testing section, and again click the Reload link. Close Synaptic, and reboot.

When you've successfully rebooted go to PCC --> Hardware --> Configure Video Card. Select your Monitor: first, then in the Graphic Card: drop down, select the GeForce 6100 to GeForce 7950 choice. It will ask if you want to use the proprietary driver. Answer Yes. This will install the newest 304 legacy driver specifically for 6xxx and 7xxx series cards.

Yeh, I saw the posts about the driver.

I seem to have good results with the xorg nv driver. Though I can't watch videos in full screen. Even a mini screen is questionable with some vids but it works. My video card did not like xorg nouveau

Maybe I can try what OP just posted. Thanks OP.

I've had a number of GeForce 6600 and 6800 cards and they worked well with the nvidia-current driver, until nVidia decided to make them legacy cards and separated the new nvidia304 legacy driver from the new nvidia-current driver.

How do I get the testing section. Is it a repository that I need to check? I don't see one listed as testing.

In Synaptic, Settings --> Repositories click on your active mirror, then in the Section(s): box, leave a space and add the word testing, click the OK button, then click the Reload link.

Thanks OP.

Interesting thing. I added the testing and hit reload.
Code: [Select]
http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/
pclinuxos/2010
main updates nonfree kde games xfce4 testing

ldetect-lst (0.1.291-7pclos2013) and dkms-nvidia304 (304.64-1pclos2013) don't have a star next to them for an upgrade. They are just green/installed. (installed version = latest version) The "component" column in synaptic does say "testing" now. Only dkms-nvidia173 has a start next to it, but my card is not an FX card.

-using kd4e mini if that means anything.

Do you also show the nvidia-current as being the 310.xxx version and being installed?

Remove testing from the Settings --> Repositories ---> Section(s): box, click Reload then leave Synaptic. In PCC do as instructed in my earlier reply.

startx brought up the desktop but it's likely it will go back to the login screen if i reboot.

I'll try more another day. Time for bed. Thanks for the help. It's fun and I'm learning new things.
