No internet
« on: February 21, 2013, 09:37:09 AM »
VirtualBox works fine and WinXP comes up, etc.  It shos that I'm connected to the internet, but for some reason, I'm unable to get out to the web.  IE keeps shutting down.  It was working on first use, but now, nothing.

Could it be because I'm using a wireless card??  In NAT mode, I get internet, but IE freezes and crashes. In other modes, no connection registers.

Is it only Internet Explorer that  can't get on the net?

Do other network applications work okay?  If it's just Internet Explorer giving you grief have you considered using Firefox, Chrome or Opera etc or do actually need IE?

I've tried running Windows update and it crashes, as well.  It's weird.  I have a connection, IE connects, I see the page, then it crashes. Same with Win update.

I'm online, but there's no "handshake" for lack of a better word.

With the VM off, check the Settings --> Network --> Attached to: setting. Is it NAT or Bridged Adapter? If NAT, try changing it to Bridged, Then restart the VM. You may have to set up the internet connection again in Windows, but then again, it may just work right off.

Post your results.

I did this, however, I did not shut down VB and restart. I was doing it on the fly.  I'l change from NAT to Bridged and then power down and reboot.

I also run Win XP in VB and my laptop connects wirelessly.  As OP stated, I think that you need use the Bridged Adapter.  Also make sure that you have the proper network name selected (wlan0 in my case).  I'm not sure if it is essential, but I think I remember that you need to make sure that cable connected is checked under Advanced (it's been well over a year since I set it up so I'm not sure that the memory cells are functioning properly).

I changed to Bridged and rebooted and got online.  But IE still crashed.  I then opened a toolbar and went dirctly to Firefox.com and downloaded the latest version.  Once installed, the problem cleared.  No surprise, something is buggy in IE.  I then downloaded and installed AVG antivirus.  It found 10 threats and removed 6.

Avira would not install because it needs an updated version of WinXP.  I cannot update WinXP because it uses IE and keeps coming up with an error.

I run Quickbooks in VB and it cannot update because it uses IE as it's internal browser.  I do have it installed on my notebook (dual boot with Win7) so it's not a pressing matter.  I would be nice, though to have everything on one box.

I may be moving my main box o this location.  If so, I'll take the spare box and plug in the WinXP drive and run QB there, then network the two and get a KVM switch....or run two monitors?  Well, this all needs to be determined down the road.

In the meantime, if i can get IE to work in VB, great.  if not, I have a work-a-round.

Sorry, georgetoon, but the above made me laugh hysterically when you expected IE to NOT crash. The only thing IE is good for is downloading Firefox. Before I got to this post, I kept thinking to myself, "Why is he using IE? Why doesn't he just use Firefox?" Then, you put the icing on the cake with the virus detection stuff.

It's things like this that make me happy and proud to be a PCLinuxOS user.

In all seriousness, georgetoon, I never run antivirus on my WinXP VirtualBox installation. Instead, before it ever goes online, I make a backup copy of the VirtualBox *.vdi file that contains my WinXP VirtualBox installation. If things should go wonky with the WinXP copy, I just copy the clean *.vdi file for the WinXP installation back over. Then, I'm back up and going again in virtually no time ... and definitely in way less time than doing a full blown WinXP installation.

Paul, thanks for the advice and glad you had a good laugh.:)  i can laugh, as well knowing that I have PCLinuxOS as my main OS.:)  I'm just glad that WinXP is not my primary OS.:)

I installed WinXP in VB for the express purpose of running Quickbooks for backup.  I have VB on my other system and will simply have to resort to using that one. It'd be nice to have it all on one system.  Seeing as how this is my spare system, it's not crucial.
