Do you mean space taken by installed packages?
How much space have you allocated for your root partition? (/)

Well, installed packages will take up space ...

But if you are concerned about the rpms being archived in /var/cache/apt/archives, you should just set up Synaptic to delete downloaded packages after installation. (Settings > Preferences > Files > Delete downloaded packages after installation.)

Or you could even delete those archived rpms manually that you don't wish to keep as backups.
