recoll problem SOLVED!
« on: February 20, 2013, 11:56:07 AM »
Installed recoll, which I have done before on earlier versions of pclos. This time, when I went to index the system, I got this message:

"Missing helper programs
"External applications/commands needed and not found
for indexing your file types:
(/home/doug/.recoll//missing):
antiword (application/msword)
python:rarfile (application/x-rar)
xls2csv (application/vnd.ms-excel)"

Found antiword in Synaptic, but not the other two. Now what?

Running Recoll after installing the one file, it seems to index without complaint. I don't know if this should be marked "solved" or not, but
I'm not indexing Microsoft files, so maybe the absense of those two files doesn't matter?

Thanx for reading, and let me know if you have the answer.

Ignore the message or suggest the 2 applications in repository at: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/board,82.0.html

http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Programming/Libraries/xls2csv-51075.shtml  for xls2csv.

The popup is supposed to only come up after the first indexing, otherwise it'd be ennoying. But the missing filters list is probably still not empty, and you can access it from the "File" menu.  xls2csv comes from the catdoc utilities by the way. More details about recoll helper programs on http://www.recoll.org/features.html

Thank you for the further information. I found two files that were not installed and installed them, and a couple that were listed are not in the repos, but
probably will never be a problem for me.  I am pleased to find so much information--so many Linux programs are notably lacking! I don't use recoll that often,
but it's one of those things that when you need it, you really need it!

I think, based on the information prvided by this last entry, I can mark the thread as solved.  Thanx again

and the names of these 2 are??? Then we could add them as recoll-dependencies

if you'd name them then they might be added to the repo...  ;)

They are in the repo.  One is catdoc. I don't remember the other. Some that were listed are installed already, either by default or because something else i use installed them previously. I remember that the python file it asked for is not in the repo. Sorry I can't help any further, but just going down the list
in the reference and comparing it with what's in the repo should make it all clear. I'm not sure that some of the suggested files are all that useful--files
that read the contents of a zipped file seem to be overkill--if I needed a file, I unzipped it. There is enough storage on the modern hard drive that it is
not normal--for me at least--to zip up anything that I'm going to keep for reference.
