Can't open Firefox, Chromium or Ktorrent after synaptic upgrade
« on: February 18, 2013, 03:05:50 PM »
Hello,

I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade my installed software packages but after the download and installation of upgradeable packages I am no longer able to start some of my Internet programs (firefox, etc.). They work in the other user profiles but not mine. I have tried to muck around with the controls but I am afraid to make things worse and am not very computer literate. Tried a search here but came up with nothing.

Can anyone help me to repair this issue? I am pretty good at following directions.

Of note: when I opened FF in the other profiles it took me straight to a page that requested I upgrade to a newer version. I have tried opening the programs by clicking on the desktop icons and via the application launcher.

I am running :
FullMonty Release:               2011.09
Kernel-version:    2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs
KDE4-version:                           4.6.5

Thanks

Being as we are on KDE 4.9.5 and kernel 3.2.18, I'd be guessing you would need to reinstall from the latest FM ISO image.

Oh. I wrongly assumed it was updated whenever I ran the update function in synaptic. I'm on it right now.

thank you

It would have ......  had you done regular upgrades to keep it current --  weekly (or more often) preferably ;)

i just started to have this problem 30minutes ago after an update.

you had to install the new OS because the programs weren't opening??

I'm having the same issue and I'm downloading a new version of pclinusox kde 2013 and i wanted to know if after you installed it if everything went back to normal??  could you just select update in the installation or did you have to do it like a clean install?? i would like to keep all my data

I'm new to this os i'm running 2012kde i'm downloading 2013. when installing it can i chose to upgrade it instead of a new install so i don't lose all my data??  Can synaptic be set up to regularly check for updates and notify you so you can install them?

Before panicking, did you try rebooting after the upgrade?

Based on that, I presume if you were to create a new account, everything would work in there, as well?  Are you able to test this theory?

If this proves true, then the problem is not with the applications/installs/OS, but the user's profile (many hidden files for individual application settings per user)...

i was attempting to create another profile and log on it to verify now when booting it goes to command line mode (i guess it's what it's called, like dos or terminal just waiting for commands).  i was able to boot my system off the usb for pclinuxos would i be able to repair  the profile from here??

Can synaptic be set up to regularly check for updates and notify you so you can install them?

Install Update-Notifier. You caan customize it to notify updates every 3 hours if want so. :)
Isn't it installed by default in Full Monty?
