[SOLVED] Updated NTFS-3g driver broke! Won't automount...
« on: February 18, 2013, 11:41:12 AM »
Help?

I just did an update only to find after booting that none of my NTFS volumes are loaded on boot to /media anymore. Flash cards and USB sticks no longer automount.

Both of these worked this morning before the update.

However, my Windows directory and Data Drive are setup manually in fstab to mount at /mnt/Windows and /mnt/Datadrive. They ARE mounted! But nothing at /media anylonger....

Datadrive used to be at /,edia/Datadrive until this broke and I moved it to /mnt/Datadrive from the fstab as I did a while ago with my Windows partition which seldom is used and was annoyingly & Uselessly in the /media directory & Nautilus.

I do have/use PASS (which was asked of me regarding the previous OpenSSL problem).

Now I get errors of "Unable to Mount Volume..." for any attempt to automount a drive into /media

Simply as stated above. When booting up after the update:

/dev/sda1   NTFS Windows partition
/dev/sda2   NTFS Data partition
/dev/sdb1   NTFS SD flash card

No longer mount automatically on bootup to /media/devicename

They are listed on the left pane in Nautilus as unmounted. If I right click to mount them I get popups

"Cannot Mount Volume"
"Unable to mount the volume 'devicename'
"Details: cannot get volume fstype.alternative"

I can manually mount them If I mkdir /mnt/devicename and mount them there from CLI
OR I can add them to fstab to auto mount at the /mnt/devicename created directory.

However, Now, normal Automounting to /media/devicename for internal NTFS partitions, USB flash drives or SD cards...

no longer works.

This began after I ran synaptic to update and noticed the ntfs-3g driver was part of today's update.

You might try using a non-pass mirror and see if you can downgrade/force the install of the older ntfs-3g and see if that fixes it.

If it does it will at least confirm the cause.

IS there a way to get a list of exactly what WAS updated today?

I tried reinstalling libntfs10, ntfs-3g, & ntfs-config. But synaptic crashed closed every time I click apply.

I tried a different repo but none of the version numbers were different.

So now I am removing each one completely and then reinstalling (as separate actions).

ALSO, I did this from the NLUUG and Now it seems I am back in business.

Something funny happened with the PASS NTFS update today.

We are fixed now.

Thanks for the advice. Still learning here!

The broken NTFS files have propagated to the other servers I think!

I updated on PASS again this evening and NTFS is broke again. I completely removed them, switched Repos (tried ibilio and nluug). Neither attempts to reinstall from other repos worked this time.

NTFS-3G was again listed as an update in the repo today and again, broke the system and now I can not mount my datadrive or any fat32/ntfs SD cards!

HELP!!!

I did this:

http://forum.mandriva.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=111988

Quote
The internal ntfs partitions aren't mounted at all, so open the Mandriva control centre>local disks> manage disk partitions, select each partition in turn then click "Mount Point", and create a mount point in /media, e.g. /media/whatever. Then click "Mount".

When you quit the app you'll be prompted if you want to "save the modifications to /etc/fstab" select yes. (you might need to log out > log in or reboot the machine).

And worked for me.

Good luck.

If I may add my two penn'orth, I had a similar problem to your first one, my ramblings are here
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,113531.0.html
I have this morning tried to update via PASS but there is nothing to mark as an upgrade. I have the 2013.1.13-1pclos2013 version of ntfs-3g installed (the one which seemed to cause the problem in the first place) but thus far my fix is still working! These could be famous last words... you could try the fix suggested at mandriva, looks like the one I applied. Good luck from me as well.

btw, (probably the wrong place to write this so I apologise in advance for any offence) I'm still getting a 404 from the NLUUG repo.

Hi Scotchman in Synaptic go to File > History and that will list - by Month/Date - the Commit Logs for the packages you've installed/upgraded/removed
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Are the drives in question still listed in /etc/fstab?

No, They normally automount in nautilus when I log in to gnome.

/dev/sda1 IS in my fstab as /mnt/Windows.

This DOES work if I mount it manually (from CLI or fstab) to /mnt

But nothing will mount automatically or manually to /media

ALSO, the working version before the update was 2011. The broke version is 2013:

        ntfs-3g (2011.1.15-1pclos2011) to 2013.1.13-1pclos2013

I am running gnome on top of the LXDE 2012 iso. And keep updated now.

I will look into the mandriva solution as a possibility today.

========

I tried the [ControlPanel]->[LocalDisks]  method mentioned at the madriva site but it forcibly mounts them permanently and then they can not be hotswapped.   This is not good for SD and USB disks!

So, still broke! I can manually mount ntfs at /mnt or fstab manually to /media but I can no longer hot swap any ntfs drives!

Help!

Can we get the old version "ntfs-3g (2011.1.15-1pclos2011)" that worked, back into the repo until the new version is fixed? All the repos now have the 2013-1 version and I can no longer downgrade to the working version!

I just downloaded NTFS-3G source and rebuilt. Still not working correct. I can manually mount NTFS only. automount/hotplugging no longer works as it did with the previous version included with the 2012 pclos iso.

All the above fixes involve permanent mounting and fixinf in fstab. That is a bad hack only. Hot plugging an NFS drive or usb/SD should still work but does not and breaks when updating the NTFS drive to the new 2013.1.13 version. the original 2011.4.12 version worked just fine.

HELP, Maintainers of the repo!

Please...
