ISO Mounting

I am still trying to define exactly what is happening, but this is what *appears* to be happening .....

I have an ISO of the film Avatar stored locally.

I wish to mount that ISO to view the contents of the ISO.

There are several GUI interfaces to achieve mounting the ISO .....  in general I have used  a right click option in KDE.

While 'playing with' the Avatar ISO today, I noticed that the last VOB file was not correct in the mount point .......  it had the correct name and size etc, but instead of playing the correct VOB the intro VOB would play!
There was no way I could play the last VOB which was <200MBs.

I tried AcetoneISO with the same results.

I could extract the VOB using Ark and it would play properly.

So I installed a few tools from the repo, and now have
Acetoneiso
furiusisomount
fuseiso
kde-services
mountiso


So far it seems that if I loop mount the ISO - requiring root password - the contents are correct.

If the ISO is mounted with user privileges - presumably using fuse/r  or whatever, the problem shows up.

I am still trying to get to the bottom of this problem, so I have no conclusions as yet.

I am posting this in the hope that someone else has met with something similar and might comment.

Furius ISO Mount Tool

This tool allows me to mount the ISO as user .....  Fuse Mount ....  or  as root ....  Loop Mount

Handy!  One tool to check both.

When Fuse mounted the VOB is incorrect

When Loop mounted the VOB is correct.


So it might appear that there is some problem with Fuse mounting .......  but the question is .....  is this a general problem or only on my install?

More tests need to be done I think ......


EDIT 1:
              Interesting ........  I found an ISO of the film Prince of Persia and got exactly the same result!

Again using Furius ISO Mount tool when mounted using Fuse the last VOB was not correctly played;
when Loop mounted requiring root password, the last VOB played correctly.

Preliminary conclusion:    at minimum this install has a problem with Fuse mounting.  What that problem might be I do not yet know ....  maybe there is a size limit for the ISO I am not aware of ........

EDIT 2:
            Got a third ISO and the very same behaviour occurs.

Tests to prove there is a repeatable problem are now finished.

Trying to find the real cause of the problem is another matter.

If anyone has suggestions please offer them ......  I am lost at this point

I found this suggestion that fuseiso did/does not behave correctly with ISOs >4GB   The ISO examples I used were sized  4.2GB  5.8GB  & 7.7GB

The release of fuseiso appears to be 8th July 2007 ....  if the numbering is actually showing the date .....  and the bug report and suggested patch 3rd April 2008

The KDE Services entry (right click menu) uses  fuseiso  through the script /usr/share/applications/iso_manager-mount-image.sh

fuse is at 2.92 and we have 2.86. fuseiso does not appear to be updated. I don't know if that is because the capabilities have been merged into fuse, or for some other reason.

do you need to see the contents of the disc or just watch the dvd?

if only watch it, vlc does that nicely, just did it

if you want to see contents and extract them, i think ark can do that too

isomaster should let you open the iso and add or remove files from it

I found no update for fuseiso .....  only that proposed patch.
I could find nothing else since 2007

If it has been merged then fuseiso would be deprecated I expect ....  but does not appear to be.
At least it is still in use directly.

For my own purposes I have altered the KDE Services entry to launch  furiusiso  which should remind me that fuse mounting a DVD >4GB causes problems, and will give me the option of using loop mount.
