FoxitReader

Foxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer for the Linux platform, with
a new streamlined interface, user-customized toolbar, incredibly small
size, breezing-fast launch speed and rich features. This empowers PDF
document users with Zoom function, Navigation function, Bookmarks,
Thumbnails, Text Selection Tool, Snapshot, and Full Screen capabilities.
Foxit Reader for Desktop Linux is provided by Foxit Corporation free for
non-commercial use.

About 3 days ago I installed this from the repos, but it appears to be broken.

When I open it, and select a file from the menu, as soon as I select the file
the program immediately exits without any error messages or output.

The same behaviour occurs when I click on a pdf file and select FoxitReader
from the kde app selection menu.

The version in the repos has always worked fine for me, but if you keep experiencing this issue, you can download it directly from the website here

To install, extract the archive file, then put the files in /tmp/foxit.

-Then, open up your file manager as root, and copy the folder from /tmp to /opt/foxit/ (you will need to create this directory).

-Create a link to application (depends on which Desktop Environment you use) to the file FoxitReader inside that directory.

You can try running the program from terminal and check what messages you get when the program exits.
This might help identify the cause of the problem...

I opened it on the commandline and got the GUI.
When I tried to open a file here is the ouput:

Quote
jzakiya@localhost ~ $ FoxitReader

Gdk-WARNING **: gdkpixbuf-drawable.c:1249: Source drawable has no colormap; either pass in a colormap, or set the colormap on the drawable with gdk_drawable_set_colormap()

Gdk-WARNING **: The gdk_draw_*_image require the drawable argument to
have a specified colormap. All windows have a colormap,
however, pixmaps only have colormap by default if they
were created with a non-NULL window argument. Otherwise
a colormap must be set on them with gdk_drawable_set_colormap

Gdk-WARNING **: Attempt to draw a drawable with depth 24 to a drawable with depth 16
The program 'FoxitReader' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 17388 error_code 8 request_code 70 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Check your video card settings.
Are you using 16-bit color depth?
If yes, try changing it to 24-bit

jzakiya there are other PDF readers in repos that gives you better functionality that Foxit Reader for Linux.

For me is a better option to download the last version of Foxit Reader for Windows and run it using WINE, works fine and have many extras.

The reason I was checking out FoxitReader was because it came up in another
thread as a replacement for Adobe Reader.  I have/use presently both Adobe
and Okular from the repos.

I did download the Windows version of FoxitReader and it seems to run fine under Wine.

I think maybe the problem with the repos version of FoxitReader is that it's way old.

The version I downloaded is 5.4.5.0124 while the respos version is 1.1.0-3pclos-2010, which is a
little long in the tooth.  This should definitely be updated.

So, I'll check out FoxitReader under Wine and compare it to the others.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

The problem is: Foxit Software haven't update (more like abandoned) the Linux version

Maybe this one from Wikipedia
On August 13, 2009, Foxit Reader version 1.1 was released for Linux. Foxit Reader for desktop Linux does not support a few features which are available on MS Windows

Current Version Windows is 5.4.5. :-X
