Suggestions for an replacement for a EEE-PC 1000H
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:11:39 AM »
So I have a rockin' core-i7 at home, but when I'm on the move I've used a EEE-PC 1000h forever.

The battery is almost dead and the left click can be frustrating. The problem is I love it to bits. It has always run pclinuxos so nicely especially with a SSD I got given more recently for it.

The problem is I don't know what to replace it with. I don't want a full size laptop. I like the size of E.

I really want the same computer with an i7 and USB3 ports. If I only had some suggestions.. cos I have a birthday coming up.  ;)

The problem is it does basic web and email fine but in the last few years I have been pumping HD video through it from my gopro camera.

A problem when I copy the large video files from the SD card to two WD external usb3 drives and the USB2 bottleneck is sooo slow.

Also, the computer won't playback the video at all, so editing is nuts. Files are just too big!

And re-encoding to a smaller format to send back home brings the machine to a crawl and takes all night.

Prefer not to bother with a android tab since they can't copy files fast from a SD and I really want the Linux console.

No. I want want what I have, only faster. Does anything exist or is it all android now?

Hi Harley,

I got an Aspire D270 for the road. Have a mouse and some small speakers. It does what I want although struggles at times. Its mintified at the moment although someone says it can run PClinuxOS, see a few threads below.

Netbooks are on the way out unfortunately, tablets and higher margin (spec) ultrabooks are in.

If you are happy with the existing device maybe a new replacement battery and mouse would help.

Maybe look at a regular rsync to the external HDs might help rather than a copy. If interrupted does not really matter.

Hi Phil.

The thing about the battery is if I do buy a new ultrabook, I'd be wasting money on a battery for a computer I wouldn't use anymore.

I use rsync already and it's the usb that is maxing out. But I'll consider your suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion.
