Toggling desktop effects with <Alt-Shift-F12> fixes the problem, but I don't want to operate this way.

As far as I can tell, the problem is related to the desktop compositor. I tried KDE and compiz compositors and both affect
the menus in LibreOffice 4.0.0.3.

Wonder how many others have this problem and does it affect other distros as well? Maybe someone has filed a bug report
with the lo team?

I agree with you... this is annoying

It's apparently ok with the default KDE4 that a new user account gets.  I tried to reinstall KDE4-config to reset the desktop config for my user account, but it didn't change a thing.  Even with reboots in-between.  I can try to reboot more times, but that seems like the definition of insanity.

I agree but the only other thing I did was changed all the splash screen and I dont see how that could have any affect on lo????

Another important piece of the puzzle.  When I tested LO in the new user account, I didn't realize the the desktop effects were disabled by default.  Logging into the new user account and toggling with Alt-Shift-F12 brings back the problem.  Guess it's time to mess with the splash screens.

It seems that the same or similar issue is discussed here in relation to the Apache software.

Thanks, Ternor, but no joy here.  I can disable antialiasing in LO and I can see some of the menu text appear, but not all.  Right now the only thing that fixes it for sure is disabling the desktop effects with Alt-Shift-F12.  Maybe the LO devs will have an update soon.

What graphic cards and drivers are involved with this problem? I have an nVidia GeForce 9800 GT card, using the 310.19 driver, and with or without desktop effects, LO Writer works exactly as expected; no problem with menus on either 32 bit or 64 bit systems.

the problem turned out to be that "screen font anti-aliasing" was enabled and set at 8 pixels. When I disabled it, all my fonts looked terrible... so I re-enabled it and increased the pixels, now things seem to be working.

Is there a means to increase the pixel count?

I've got the Lenovo T60, 14" laptop.  The graphics according to the PCLOS hardware browser is ‎Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller. According to the Lenovo site, it's an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.

I tried that.  It improved the problem, but didn't fix it.

Just wondering... is it coincidence that all the libreoffice4.0 files in the repository are version 4.0.0.3 and the libreoffice4.0-mandriva-menus is a different version, 4.0.0?

I was wondering if it was the cairo lib. Apparently lo renders text with cairo
and although the menu issue is now working I'm having a different problem
with this version that I've never had with the others.

I wrote a macros to translate some pasted text (POS data) from my
web server into a QIF file. I used to be able to just copy the text from
Firefox and paste it into my spreadsheet click a button and be done. But
now when I paste the text the data doesn't go into the same cells as before
and the cells are all crazy stretched out.

I found a work around fix... if I 1st paste into lo-writer then select-all and copy
from writer and then paste into lo-spreadsheet it works like it did before...

That's just crazy but it works for now. If this keeps up I'll have to code a
better solution :o(

After messing around with it and basically getting nowhere on this problem, I just completely uninstalled LO4.0 and went through the alternative offline install procedure on LO365_32bit.  All is well now.  I'll wait for the next rev of LO before I try it again.

Maybe this is connected, worth a try, its changing fonts behaviour.

That's great that you finally got it fixed.
