SOLVED - LibreOffice 4.0.0.3 menus not displayed properly
« on: February 16, 2013, 08:27:55 AM »
Just updated lo-manager and decided to use it to update libreoffice to the latest version.  Install went well.  When I run any of the lo programs, some (not all) of the menu items in the menu bars only display the underscore (for the hot key selections) but not the text.  It's fairly unusable at this stage.
I've been keeping up with the rolling updates, so I've got the latest OS and KDE 4.9.5.  Anyone know of any desktop tweaks to try?

Something like this?

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108514.0.html

Thanks for the link.  I'm surprised it didn't turn up in a search for libreoffice.  Anyway, the appearance of the app shown at the beginning of that thread is very similar to what I'm experiencing.  I tried changing the Tools-Options-View settings in LO Writer and it changed the problem to different menu items, but did not fix it.  Ms_meme's ultimate solution was to run lomanager once again.  I can try that again and report back.

Rebooted.  Reinstalled LOmanager.  Reinstalled LO via LOmanager.  Rebooted.  Ran LO Writer.  Same problem.  I'm inclined to install the previous version of LO from the rpm.

Either that or completely remove LO (and all its related files) and reboot before installing again.

Via LOmanager, or Synaptic?

No joy.  Here's what I did:
Used LOmanager to remove LO 4.0.0.3
Reboot
Used LOmanager to install LO 4.0.0.3.  While downloading LO-base with about 6 minutes to go, the progress dialog box disappeared.  Thinking this was an indication of corruption of the LOmanager, I rebooted and removed LOmanager with Synaptic.
Reboot
Reinstalled LOmanager
Use LOmanager to install LO.  While downloading LO-base, the dialog box disappeared again.  This time I noticed that the HD light was still flashing every few seconds, so I waited.  After about another 6 minutes, the next dialog box appeared.  So it seems that the install process was happening, but there was no indication on the desktop.
After the install finished, I started LO Writer and still the same problem.
Maybe I should be looking more closely at KDE 4.9.5.

You're on to something, Pinoc.  I created a new user.  Logged in as that user, and lo and behold, the LO apps all work fine.  Now to figure out what needs changing.

Toggling desktop effects with <Alt-Shift-F12> fixes the problem, but I don't want to operate this way.

As far as I can tell, the problem is related to the desktop compositor. I tried KDE and compiz compositors and both affect
the menus in LibreOffice 4.0.0.3.

Wonder how many others have this problem and does it affect other distros as well? Maybe someone has filed a bug report
with the lo team?

I agree with you... this is annoying

OK I did some searching and this problem has been an on going thing...

I removed lo and I'm now reinstalling.

I'll keep you guys informed if I find anything that hasn't been tried that works

It may be a video card problem specific...

I'm not sure how, but I removed and reinstalled lo and the menu problem was still
there. Rebooted... still there. anyway, finally after several reboots I now have
lo menus with KDE desktop effects...

wish I knew exactly what happened to fix it...

Hopefully it will stay fixed.
