[SOLVED] PCLinuxOS2013.02 LiveCD boot error

Hi,

I tried to run the PCLOS13.02 LiveCD on my Dell Optiplex 755 and I get the following error message when I use the Safe Boot mode:


ERROR: Unable to mount the livecd

Dropping you to a limited shell
Loading /initrd/bin/ash
/initrd/bin/ash: can't accesss tty: job control turned off


I already tried "no apic nolapic acpi = off" without success. The problem occurs booting from DVD as well as from USB flash drive.

The iso seems to be ok as I installed the OS successfully on my Lenovo X61 using the same DVD the same day.

My hardware is:
Intel DualCore 3.16 GHz
4GB RAM
HD 250 GB Hitachi @ SATA-0

Any idea out there how to solve this issue?

Hi  Joe_patroni, and welcome to the Forum. 
I really probably shouldn't say anything, not being an 'expert' in this area, but when I use a Live CD/DVD/USB I don't use any extra parameters.
Have you tried just running the Live DVD, letting it boot, and simply logging in as guest ?

I would concentrate on using the LiveUSB to boot ......  which would eliminate any possibility of the optical drive having difficulty reading the highly compressed OS image.

1. You should check the MD5sum of the file on the USB device against the original in the ISO used to create it.
    If they don't match, you need to redo the USB stick.

2. I presume you have checked the MD5sum of the ISO itself against the number supplied with the ISO.

3. You should be able to edit the Grub menu.lst file on the LiveUSB to omit the quiet and splash= boot parameters.
    This will allow you to see all the boot lines in real time.

4. What utility did you use to create the LiveUSB?

5. You should also detach any external devices attached to the PC when booting ...... particularly ALL USB devices.

Hi guys, thank you very much for your quick reply!!

I have tried to run the LiveCD without any boot commands at the very beginning. I see the boot progres bar, but when it's at 100% it just freezes and doesn't accept any input anymore. I started to try with the "noapic" stuff only after I found a post saying that this could help. Unfortunately it didn't 

I have checked the md5sum after downloading. I created the LiveUSB using "Linux Live USB Creator" in WinXP. It creates various files on the flash drive, but there is no ISO anymore to check for the md5sum.

Now I tried with all devices disconnected and the USB plugged in the rear slot, unfortunately again without success.

@Just17, I don't understand exactly your point 3 (editing GRUB). How can I do that? (sorry, I'm quite new to all that  )

3.  would apply if you had used the PCLinuxOS LiveUSB creator ....  likely not with something used in Windows.

Rather than checking the MD5sum of the ISO, check the MD5sum of the  livecd.sqfs  file on the USB and also from within the ISO ....  you would need to gain access to the files in the ISO by mounting it, to get the MD5sum.
