<solved> Stupid question.....(and improper subject line!)
« on: February 14, 2013, 09:37:06 PM »
I am trying Lxde and like it a lot.... I would like to compare it to Xfce.  I downloaded and installed ( I thought) from synaptic, task-xfce and task-xfce-plugins.  Now what?  I re-booted and nothing. It is not listed in grub.  How do I switch from lxde to xfce?  I did not mess with my working Lxde install, I have a working/updated install of Lxde on a spare hard drive and am trying to switch to Xfce on that drive. Thanks for any and all help!  Larry

it is listed under the screen where you choose user and password, under the button called session(iirc) you can choose between the available desktop environments installed

lxde, xfce, kde4, gnome and the other desktop environments available on synaptic can coexist on the same install, no need to choose them on the boot unless you want a differnet install for each desktop environment

btw, there is no stupid question but we do have some forum rules, related on how to ask questions and how to make posts that can help you on future posts

Apologies.... In the future I will be sure to ¨Use meaningful, specific subject headers¨. All of the forum links I checked referred to using xfce with kde (not lxde) so I did not know what to try.  I looked in Session and did find an option for Xfce, however when selected, it just loaded the lxde DE anyway. Any additional help will be appreciated.  Larry

then i seems that you didn't installed all the necessary files to load the de

what did you installed?  i ignore if lxde still has a task-lxde in synaptic

sometimes when the de is small in packages, i just install everything except devel packages to be sure

Thanks.  I re-downloaded task-xfce  Metapackage for the xfce D.E.  and task-xfce-plugins  Metapackage for the xfce panel plugins.  It worked this time (still do not know what I did wrong, but it was obviously me).  Marking the thread <solved> and thanks again!
