Temporarily enable it by adding the word   test   to the "Section" line of the repository entry in Synaptic, upgrading VLC ONLY, and then removing the word  test  again.

No, still doesn't work.

Vlc reports 2.0.5 Twoflower, but FF still ask for the x-vlc plugin.

Maybe the plugin is generally obsolete but it's the web interface for the satellite box that requires updating to account for that.

I don't know why it still works under Windows7 in that case, vlc appears to have different functions implemented in Linux and Windows.

In 32 bit the test repo is called  testing  whilst in the 64 bit it is called  test

In VLC, I go to the Playlist window then "Local Network>Universal Plug 'n' Play>MediaTomb>(select the folder you require)>Click on *.ts



Perhaps I'm misinterpreting, but this way works for me, it's just embedding in FF or Chrome that doesn't

Could one of you post a URL to something that gives the error about a missing plugin?

If we can all use the one URL then we can know exactly what the situation is.

I am copying the URL from the browser (when it fails to play and gives the error) into VLC as a network stream.

I am not using MediaTomb on my Foxsat. If I need something that works, then I have Samba installed and get at media files that way!

The custom software includes Twonky or Mediatomb (Martin is using Samba instead)

You can access the receiver's webif over your LAN and play the recorded files either in VLC (which works fine) or in the browser's plugin window (which doesn't work in Linux, but does in Windows)

I've tried setting FF to use Totem's embedded player, which should work for MPEG video, but also doesn't.

The files are H264 Mpeg with Mpeg audio, but they have a .ts extension, I'm wondering whether changing the file extension will allow totem to "see" them.

I suspect the format of that string is not suitable for VLC which is why it crashes ....  but as I don't have that set up I cannot be sure.

VLC is quite happy with .ts files ....  I used it myself for a while.

I used dvblast & mini sapserver to broadcast (multicast) on the LAN and could select the channel I wanted from the playlist section of VLC -- the SAP info allowed that.

I also used MuMuDVB for the same purpose.

I was distributing some 17 channels (7 TV & 10 Radio) from a DTT dongle out over the LAN.


I would be inclined to go through the browser settings and change all the media entries one by one (changing them back if they had no effect) until I found one that would cause VLC or Mplayer to play the stream.
You might have better luck with Mplayer.
