x-vlc browser plugin
« on: February 14, 2013, 04:21:11 PM »
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to find or install the x-vlc browser plugin (for FF and Chrome browser), so that I can watch streamed video from my Humax STB DLNA server in my laptop browser.

Thanks

EDIT:  :-[ probably should be in the software section, sorry.  :-[

I looked in the packages also to check and I could not find what you are looking for. But i did a dig on google and check this link out. It may have some info to help or you can look thru there. But will caution you that they PC Linux advisors will stress to us that we should not install outside of the synaptic and they are correct remember that. I learned that 6 months ago. NOW I LISTEN. And remember to stick to the updates and packages either 2012 or 2013

heres the link

Will VLC itself stream the content if you put the info in?

IIRC, the latest VLC has been built with all plugins so there are no external plugins in the repository as for previous versions.

I don't know anything about your particular plugin.

On the other hand, is it not possible to edit the settings of the browser to make it use VLC for particular purposes/streams?

Hi Just17,

Yes, VLC will play the stream directly, over my home wifi, from mediatomb installed on the satellite receiver.

The files are H264 MP4/MP3 in a .ts container according to VLC

I can't find any downloadable plugins that match the one required.

The web interface for the receiver has an icon for the recorded content, if I click on a file a new browser window opens and tries to stream the content in an embedded window.

EDIT: The file streams in a Firefox browser window in Win7 with no additional plugins ???

This is what happens: (solved image linking using tinypic) :)

Have a look at firefox preferences - applications  and see if you can find it attempting to use x-vlc anywhere and change it.

I would look first at MPEG-4 Video ....  for which mine shows "Use VLC".
I also have entries for VLC Media Player and Mplayer as well as 'Other' from where I can choose (I believe).

If not the MPEG-4 Video setting then maybe a different one ......  not sure as I did not meet the problem myself  ;)

Yes but I use Samba/CIFS on the Humax and play with an XBMC client or more often just download the file and play it with almost any media player.

Does that also work for the live buffer?

Still can't get this to work :(

I've been told that these packages may be needed, but none of them appear in the package list

vlc-plugin-pulse
mozilla-plugin-vlc (appears in the x86_64 repo though)
libavcodec-extra-52

Can anyone throw light on this?

Told by whom or by what?

What version is VLC reporting itself as?  (VLC - Help - About)

Told by someone on the AVForums FoxSat thread who's running another distro  ;)

Can't check the 32 bit version at the moment as I've swapped out the drive and running PCLOS64bit :) but I think from memory it's vlc 2.0.3, same as the 64bit version.

However: Although the mozilla-plugin-vlc package is present in the 64bit repos trying to install it returns;

mozilla-plugin-vlc:
 Depends: vlc (= 1.1.13)
Depends: libvlccore.so.4()(64bit)  but it is not installable

That is because it is a plugin for the older version of VLC.

The newer version of VLC has been built with all plugins included.

What applies in another distro does not necessarily apply here.  ;)

Do please check the VLC version and post when you get it  ;)

The versions of vlc (2.0.3) and Firefox (19) in the 64bit RC1 don't work either. "A plug in is needed to play this content"

Is it possible that the web interface for the satellite receiver is written not taking the vlc version into account, i.e. asking for a specific plugin that's no longer required?
