USB device showing in dmesg but not listed in lsusb??? Solved
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:14:06 PM »
Not much to add to that except it was working till last evening. It had been showing up in "Sound and video configuration". Had an issue come up, then saw a second reference to it in sound and video config. Deleted the greyed out item. now I can't get it to show up, except in the "view hardware" section in "Configure computer" where it identifies it perfectly.

Original installation of this OS (2012 KDE) had it up and running no problem.

Thanks!

It's a burr-brown USB speaker setup.

Just wondering why *any* usb device would be reported by dmesg and not lsusb...

{added} Just17: This is the same system that you helped me with regarding no sound in clementine and youtube. did a forced shutdown, reinstalled Pulse audio. ... over here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,113306.0.html

Ah!

Launch PulseAudio Volume Control and ensure the device is not turned Off under the Config tab.

Pavucontrol --> configuration shows "built-in audio" -- profile is analog stereo duplex
                                                         "speakers"       -- analog stereo output

Neither are "off".

went back into pavucontrol, and under playback checked out "alsa playback on" button. Clicked it. Changed it to "Speakers analog stereo". That is now the new label for my usb speakers. Up til last night it was "burr-brown"!

So, I can switch it back and forth. Now, what i'll do is see if I can do both simultaneously as I used to: Usb xmitter for the rest of the house and yet do local speakers for other tasks.

Still, shouldn't the device show up in lsusb if it shows in dmesg? That is still my question...

Yes, I would expect so.

Is it possible that it is listed but not as Burr-Brown as you expect and would have looked for?

Obviously it is not now named burr-brown in the PA Vol Control tab, so maybe that is because the name is not being picked up, and thus not appearing in the LSUSB listing .......  worth checking again just in case.  ;)

Yeah, I thought of that and checked it a while ago, expecting a "duh" moment. didn't happen...didn't see it there by any name at all.

I'll go ahead and close this. Also, I found that Pavu isn't just a "master" settings program. When I run xmms, I can set it to put a signal out to the speakers or USB. Each program, I found is controlled as each program is running. Context sensitive. Wasn't aware of that.

Thanks,

Tim

There are a lot of other functions available through PA also ..... PAPrefs allows a sound stream to be output to ALL sound devices simultaneously.
It also allows sound devices on the LAN to be used .....  so a sound stream can be played on one PC to the speakers on another PC.

You can also set up a virtual loopback device and feed two separate sound sources into it and play the mixed output.

The PA system is quite powerful, and provides a GUI for a lot of settings that would be quite complicated to manage otherwise.

When you have several sound devices it is well worth the effort to play about with it  ;)
