Gnome-Disk-Utility (a.k.a. Palimpsest) Problems!
« on: February 14, 2013, 08:53:33 AM »
Hi friends, I have recently installed PCLinuxOS KDE 2013.02 version and apparently "gnome disk utility" is having some kind of issue because everytime I open it, it opens but nothing appears, is just a blank box, no letters, no icons, nothing! my hard drives doesn't appears or it doesn't recognizes them, I don't know!

I can use Gsmartcontrol but GDU is more simple to use and to read the conditions of the hard disk, and it have another advantage, you can use it to format and install filesystems to external hard disk and usb flash drives, this program works in many linux distro no matter the Desktop Enviroment (except here in pclinuxos).

I would like to see GDU working again in pclinuxos because I use it to format many external hard disk and flash drives, I don't like to use GParted because if you make a mistake it can erase your MBR or another important partition (happened twice, had to re-install OS), Gnome-Disk-Utility is more safe to use than GParted!

downgrading udisks appears to work around the problem.

It worked! but there's a little problem, the application doesn't give S.M.A.R.T. Readings for the hard drive, everything else works but no the SMART feature, anyway thank you and thanks everyone else who tried to find a solution for this problem, at least I can use it to format HDD's and Flash drives now :D

P.S. Hey Just17, I saw the shamrock on your avatar and looked in your profile, are you really from Ireland? That's so cool man, I saw a couple of videos on youtube about Ireland and Inmediately fell in love, is a beautifull place, I wish in the future to go to ireland and see the medieval castles and emerald island too!

After last update (ntfs-3g?) downgrading udisks no longer helps run palimpsest, program crashes.

Run palimpsest with udisks version 1.98.0-1pclos2012:
Code: [Select]
[user@localhost ~]$ palimpsest

Run palimpsest with udisks version 1.0.4-2pclos2011:
Code: [Select]
[user@localhost ~]$ palimpsest

(palimpsest:3106): libgdu-WARNING **: unhandled property 'DeviceAutomountHint'

(palimpsest:3106): libgdu-WARNING **: unhandled property 'DeviceAutomountHint'

With the old udisks installed, updated ntfs-3g, and was able to launch gnome-disk-utility without problem.

Note: I have not logged out or rebooted, so that might have some effect.

Can anybody explain the reason for this:

Code: [Select]
libgdu-WARNING **: unhandled property 'DeviceAutomountHint'
All drives in the system is mounted and working properly.
Automount external storage is not used.

Maybe this can help?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/another distro/+source/gnome-disk-utility/+bug/571038

Replace "another distro" with "*buntu" in the link...

Many thanks for the tip, agmg!

With gparted I found the extra unallocated space on the disk and fix it.
No other disk partitioning utility were not sensitive to this issue, only palimpsest.

Thank you again! :)

What did you do with the unallocated space to 'fix it'?

This unallocated space was very small, only 2 MB.
I increased the size of the adjacent partition by adding to it this unallocated space.
