Popular Remote Desktop Tool TeamViewer 8 For Linux (Stable) Released

TeamViewer is a popular application for remote control, desktop sharing, file transfer, online meetings and more, that's available for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, Android and iPhone. The application is free (freeware) for personal use only!

The Linux version uses Wine which comes bundled with it (it doesn't require the user to install Wine, like the old Picasa for Linux package), so it's not a native Linux application.

The latest TeamViewer 8 (stable) for Windows was released back in December and today, the stable version is also available for Linux. While in beta, there were two bugs that affected for many users (myself included) until recently, which resulted either an "TeamViewer Daemon is not running. Please start teamviewerd and then restart TeamViewer" error message or a ghost window showing up.

But these issues seem fixed and TeamViewer 8 for Linux has worked properly in my tests under Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 and 12.04. I'm not sure if these issues were present in other Linux distributions and if they were fixed or not.

Upgrading to the latest TeamViewer 8 is required if you want to establish a remote connection to a computer running TeamViewer 8, however, this is not neccesary if you want to connect to a computer running TeamViewer 4, 5, 6 or 7 if you're using TeamViewer 7.

Installed and ran it. Then the next time and every time after that I try and run it I get:
The teamviewer daemon not running!
Please start the daemon (needs root permissions) before running Teamviewer
teamviewer --daemon start
If you did not disable the daemon, Please contact Teamviewer Support Run the following command to obtain all the log files:
teamviewer --ziplog

can not replicate this. Please uninstall any version of Teamviewer, then install the latest version again and see if it works then.

I got it-- I removed it ALL-- config files and all-- went into home folder and show hidden files and deleted a .teamviewer folder, then reinstalled. Now it is working again.  Thank You.

I installed the Teamviewer 8 on PCLinuxos KDE and LXDE. When I want to create connection to the these machines from another computer, in the target machine popups a window without any text and with exlisively an OK button, nothing else. If I click on this button, the popup window disappears and the connection does not be created.

What is the solution?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you. First of all I uninstalled the Teamviewer 8. Then I downloaded and unpack the teamviewer_linux.tar.gz 7 version into a folder so now it seems to me it works using Wine.

FWIW - Teamviewer uses wine no matter what version you are running. At least you got something that works for now.

Yes but in case of Teamviewer 8 it does not work with Wine. Maybe one have to wait for the newest version of Teamviewer 8.

But it is interesting that the current Teamviewer 8 works in Suse Linux 12.2 stable.

I had to uninstall teamviewer 8 also-- the problem kept reoccurring So this is a broken package, can you put 7 back in the repos and have both there until this gets fixed, Please.

Got the teamviewer --daemon start message too.
  • Uninstalled the package
  • removed the teamviewer8 folder  from .config
  • Installed the package
  • Started teamviewer. Went fine
  • trying to connect to my laptop
  • empty box on laptop with ok button. clicked ok. No connection or request for password
  • rebooted
  • back in KDE started Teamviewer and back at teamviewer --daemon start message
No difference on 32 or 64 versions.

Could we please have version 7 back as an alternative unless/until the issue can be fixed?

Tested on my 64 bit install and an another box  (32 bit and updated from PASS).

Works fine now.
Had to remove the old TeamViewer 8 package (with synaptic) 1st and reinstalling the updated Teamviewer 8 package.
Runs now without an issue!
