just a prefice --- yes, I've tried reinstalling Clementine...

...first, how I got into this mess...:
What happened is I did a keypress combination trying to set up a screen effect trigger (I think it was Ctrl f11 or f12). This blanked my screen and I knew of no way to get out of the situation. Doing a CTRL-Alt-Del didn't trigger a logout. I pressed the power button to force a logout but when I got the screen back, the text showed that the logout process stopped somewhere. So I forced a shutdown.

On restart, PCLOS reports that my mainboard sound isn't working so it says "falling back to..." the same device! I then get the KDE startup sounds.

A device management window pops up with what I believe to be the mainboard sound device greyed out and asks if I want it removed. There is another copy of the same device in there that is not greyed out.

WHen I try to play sound files through my regular speakers via clementine, it reports "Connection refused".
When I try to play a youtube video, I get no sound.

Pulseaudio is still set as active. I see no changes anywhere in any settings.

If I use Amarok, I get sound through my speakers ok.

Thanks in advance.

Tim

Adding the following:
The device that still works is the burr-brown usb speakers.
The device that it reports as failing is HDA Intel PCH (alc892 analog). It then reports it is falling back to the same device! This is at KDE startup after a reboot.

"Sound and video configuration" shows a greyed copy of HDA intel and one not greyed. Ditto with burr-brown.

First of all, do not force shut down your computer using the power switch. It's bad :P
If all else fails, try Alt+SysRq(Print Screen)+REISUB

How to remember REISUB?
1. Restart Even If System Utterly Broken
2. Raising Elephants Is So Utterly Boring
3. Word BUSIER spelled backwards.

Now, to your problem.
Have you tried alsaconf from terminal to reconfigure your sound devices?
Do a search in the forum for "alsaconf", you will find many related threads...

Check the phonon backend in use and try one of the other options ....  gstreamer for instance

KDE CC - Hardware - Multimedia

Does PulseAudio Volume Control launch correctly?

If not then you need to get PulseAudio working properly.

Thanks. I will have time to work on this later today and will let you know how it goes. Actually, this is a recent install on a new mitx system so even a  reinstall would be simple enough...but that will be a last resort.

Well, i ran alsaconf, which didn't help, but I did reinstall pulse audio and that fixed clementine and youtube.

the only issue now is that while my Burr-Brown usb transmitter is listed in hardware, it's not being recognized by the sound system. Kind of odd, because when I installed the OS, it just took it and used it!

I'll keep working at this.

Thanks....

As the issue for which the thread was started is now resolved you might edit the title of the first post to include [SOLVED]

Thank you.  ;)
