{snipped my previous...}
Thanks for the response
There is more than a bit of the dev shuffle going on, not at all unusual ...
The secret society mentality
You ain't from around here [heavy hillbilly accent]
I think you understand where I'm coming from, Horusfalcon
I'm still a member in good standing in all those communities
In reviewing this thread, there's nothing that I can't live with...
I'm not willing to spend 100's of hours wading through dev chats for meaningful answers to questions of organizational philosophical history/direction
Though I am interested
I have some time before my mageia installs expire [as it were]
When a xcfe version is available, I'll set up a hdd
Going in reverse order (last first, that is...)
Huh... there used to be an XFCE version... I've got some old disks circa 2009 laying around with XFCE.
I have no experience with mageia - you like it, do you? I think, given time and some runtime, you might come to like PCLinuxOS more, but I'm understandably biased.
I get that you're not interested in burning a lot of time going through dev chats... most of us hereabouts aren't really keen on that either. There's a lot of activity on the support sections, folks trying to help other folks. It's a mode that works well for me - I've found that I can be unafraid to make an error as long as I'm learning, and I manage to help out where I can. Not an expert, but I know a little, and maybe I can guess the rest?
Questions about organizational philosophy and direction are sometimes hard to answer when things are in flux. There's generally more to those type of questions than meets my eye, anyway.
What I believe I understand about where you're coming from is (and tell me if I'm wrong, please) that you've been hopping from one distro to another in search of
that one special distro that has it all: control, conveyance, continuity, context, and community. That's a worthwhile pursuit, and you'll find PCLinuxOS to be pretty close if not perfect. (Again, I might be just a little biased...)
From what you've told us here, you've had some issues with forum mods in other places in the past which led to some poor outcomes. I'll say this about that: the devs and mods here are not like the devs and mods I've seen elsewhere - they roll up their sleeves and help folks with their problems here, and they still find time to contribute as developers, packagers, and moderators. Treat 'em like folks, 'cause they'll generally give as good as they get.
To ape your "hillbilly" comment, we ain't perfect, but who the heck is?
Yeah, you're right about there having been some recent unpleasantness here. You may know more about it than I do (I don't really have time to keep up with all that anymore). I don't really know what to say except that a community is only as valuable as its people. You won't find a nicer, more willing, and more helpful group of people anywhere. Put that to the test for yourself.
Later On,
D
