Yet another Ubun refugee

I started on this path in 08, when my notebook's hdd [XP pre-installed] went bad
Ubun 8.04, got my feet wet
Moved to mint in pursuit of user-friendly, was made to feel unwelcome for pointing out mint doesn't support network shares
Back to Ubun through 10.10
Set up virtualbox, which allows quick distroshopping
It became clear that, I couldn't live with the Unity DE [desktop environment], which to me ruled out, all the  Distros downstream of Ubun.  As canonical cut off direct support to derivatives like Kbun seems justified
One of my parameters became close to the source, either Redhat or Debian
A good community another
I didn't get booted from the Ubun forum, various mods did suggest I leave, for having a less than positive opinion of Unity
My journey led me to Mageia KDE. One of the  mods on  the forum took offense when when I changed my signature to "Proudly Terminalphobic" & would follow me around & correct me [right or wrong].  I objected to several of the mode by pm.
The response, gee we know he's an arse, but he does so much work, get over it...
So here I am, test driving the community

Welcome to PCLOS ....  I hope you enjoy your stay  ;)

Only piece of advise ......  all communities have different dynamics, so give yourself a little time reading and understanding how things are done here, which should make your stay a pleasant one.  :D

 Hello Garthhh.
I think you will find this a very friendly forum. Which version of PCLinuxOS are you trying?

I understand that we all have our moments
When you dish it out you better be able to take it
The back & forth is fine
& further I understand that technically you can't always get there from here :D

I'm seeing many positive things on Pclos
User-friendly,Little or no fussing around with terminal or configuration files
The community seems to be a good mix of old & new [technical skill level],
A reasonable amount of documentation

I'm not sure if there are people in place to keep it all moving, long term
I'm unsure of the source code, today's relationship with Mandriva?

I'm trying to find the dealbreakers...

I guess if you actively seek negatives you are sure to find them ...  nothing is perfect.  ;)

There is no special relationship with Mandriva or any other distro .....  yes there are items from Mandriva, Suse and others incorporated as decided by the devs.

Searching the forum or the Wiki should give you the answers to most questions .....  and the Mag articles are a resource that should not be underestimated.

... but most of all ..........  Have fun!   :D

Hello Garthhh.
I think you will find this a very friendly forum. Which version of PCLinuxOS are you trying?

I have a older KDE version  on a hdd
I have a new torrent seeding haven't burned it yet
I need to replace Mageia on a couple of desktops, over the next few months
KDE. Is too resource intensive, though it does everything I need...
The desktops are
HP dc5000sff
2.2ghz Pentium 4
1g ram
Various hdds & external storage

De wishlist
Virtual desktops, I really like this as an organizational scheme [it's the Unity dealbreaker]

Hi Garthhh, Welcome to the forum  :)

You should try out the LXDE-spin, it's much lighter on resources than KDE and fast too  ;)

There's one now, negative that is...
About is pretty vague as to who's upstream

By appearances PCLOS is a benign dictatorship, in operation one of the more efficient organizational structures
No objection to that
But the devil is in the details

There's nothing vague about it. You asked a specific question and got a specific answer. If you want to know where our packages come from, we package them ourselves. If you have the time, and the interest, you are welcome to help with that packaging... it's all a volunteer effort from members of the community.

The PCLinuxOS magazine is also a volunteer community effort. Anyone can submit an article, and if help is needed, the magazine staff will answer any questions, and do the final formatting and grammar corrections, if needed.

If you are wondering about details, ask specifically about what detail it is that you are wondering about. You are, yourself, being rather vague with your inquiries, which means we can only guess what it is that you want to know.  ???

As a rolling release it matters where the packages come from
Looks like mostly redhat
The secrecy is odd

What part of "If you want to know where our packages come from, we package them ourselves." is unclear to you. Our packages come from us, the PCLinuxOS packagers. Absolutely nothing secret about it.

True but not accurate
Your response is
The parent patting a small child on the head in a dismissive way...
The package maintainers aren't generating the source code,
So it's coming from outside Pclos
I can't verywell make a decision about the long term viability
I'm not trying to bait you into an emotional response
Just wondering who's shoulders we're standing on

Mint:  "was made to feel unwelcome,"
*buntu:  "various mods did suggest I leave"
Mageia:  "mods on  the forum took offense"

Do we see a pattern emerging? You could just try the distro to see what you like or don't like, or help where you can. That would be far more constructive.
