How to log in to CUPS?
« on: February 12, 2013, 04:26:29 AM »
I keep getting the dreaded "Forbidden" message when trying to modify my printers. I've read the answer is to log in to CUPS as root, using the localhost:631 address in the address bar.
I'd love to be able to do that, but I am never prompted to log in, and there is no login button anywhere, not even after you click on 'administration'.
I've posted a picture of my screen so you can see for yourself there is just no way for me to log in.
Any help appreciated.
Here is the picture.

Exactly where/when are you getting these forbidden messages.

What can you NOT do from the location of the pic you posted?

What are you trying that does not work?

Is something you try giving you a 'forbidden' response?

CUPS doesn't require you to login until you try to change something.

If you go to localhost:631 and click on administration, and then click on "Add Printer", for example,
you should then get a popup asking you to login.

At least that's what happens to me.

That's exactly the problem - - - there is no popup asking me to log in.
That forbidden message happens when you try to change something about a printer; just about anything.

You're initial post says you didn't get a popup even when you click on Administration.
You shouldn't until you click on "Add Printer.".   Have you clicked on "Add Printer"?

Just a long-shot here but add yourself to the sys and lpadmin groups (that's assuming that you're not already in those groups) then reboot and try again.
