"We don't need no stinking Adobe Reader in the repo

There is foxit, there is okular and many many more... "

again, foxit is not on 64 bit repos yet, only okular, this is why we are discussing the installation of adobe reader

"Why would we add this security risk that pretends to be a pdf reader to our repo?"

again, some users need adobe reader because the other options doesn't offer specific features and tools, security risk or not, that is why we have it on 32 bit repos atm

uT6:

I have thought about trying to use the Windows 32-bit version of Adobe Reader via Wine, but--and this may sound trivial, but I put large stock in visual design--the visual appearance of the GUIs of Windows applications in Wine looks uglified (sic)--especially the fonts, which are smallish and pixelated. Dunno if there is a setting tweak that I've overlooked there. . . .  And then there is that security vulnerability of AR. . . .  Oh, well.

Although I talked earlier about running the 32-bit version of Adobe Reader in VirtualBox, as was suggested to me, I think I'll just live with Okular, for now, though I will be playing around with VB, which I've not used before. I'm starting another thread to query what good things VB can be used for.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised; you can run Operating Systems in Virtual Box, dependant upon how much room you have on your Hard Drive, plus RAM, and Processing power.
It is pretty light on resources actually, a great tool.  :)

I found FOXIT reader to be just as good at dealing with PDF files. It is an easy download if it is not in the repo.
I am running pclos full monty  with  windows and Suse linux running as guests on virtualbox.  Foxit is insalled and good on all of them.
Dont waste time chasing adobe it now comes with strings attached .

Adobe Reader is not in the repo for PCLOS 64-bit, which is the OS I have.  Neither is Foxit.

Now that I have been essentially forced to use Okular for awhile (rather than having access to Adobe Reader) I've even gotten rather used to its GUI, and don't dislike it so much. Dunno, but it even seems to be growing on me. . . .

Adobe reader is closed source and Adobe does not provide a 64 bit version for Linux. Foxit is the same. It may be possible to get them working if enough 32 bit libraries are dumped into your 64 bit OS.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

can that be done, Texstar?  not theoretically, for compatibility purposes with this type of uncooperative, necessary apps?

The only thing I miss about Adobe Reader is tabs.  Otherwise I am glad to have seen the last of it.  I am happy with Okular.  Foxit automatically copies text to the clipboard while you are still selecting it, a very annoying 'feature'.  Okular beats Foxit hands down.
