Adobe Reader still not available in repo
« on: February 11, 2013, 11:32:49 AM »
Currently, Adobe Reader is not available via Synaptic, when I search using “adobe.”  In the past, it has been available.

In a recent Forum thread, <http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=110976.0>, a post dated 11/20/12 said that:

“at present, there is spelling mistake in the package name (AdbeReader_enu), should be corrected shortly”

That apparently has not happened yet.  Any idea when Adobe Reader will become available again in Synaptic? I prefer it to Okular and I don't want to go outside the repo to get it

Seems to be fine, here:

Did you "Reload" Synaptic?

Adobe Reader is available, maybe you want the FF plugin ? that one is missing but not needed in FF. I've got Browser Plugin for AdobeReader still installed but disabled.
And no, it's not in the repo anymore.

I asked that in my initial reply:

Did you "Reload" Synaptic?

And, the answer was:
Yes, I did.

The repo that I am using is the top one in the list in Synaptic:

http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/

I had wondered if there were a difference in content between the various repos, and thought about changing to another one to see if Adobe Reader were available there. However, I am reluctant to bounce around from one repo to another, since it has been said to possibly cause problems even though they are supposed to mirror one another, as I understand it.  (I know that you should only be set up with ONE repo at a time.)

It would be nice to have both Adobe Reader and its FF plugin.  I am running the 64-bit version of PCLOS.

Ahh...

I am not.  That could definitely be part of the problem.

I am running the 64-bit version of PCLOS.

I can confirm that Adobe Reader is not yet available for 64-bit.

There are good alternatives like Okular.

Yes, according to the Adobe specs here, it is 32-bit only:

http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/tech-specs.html

I thought about trying to install the Windows version of Adobe Reader (which runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows PCs), via Wine. but given the zillion extra files and dependencies that Adobe Reader requires, I doubt that would work, and it would probably be asking for trouble.

Well, I can use Okular instead, but I do think that the Adobe Reader GUI is much better designed.

On another subject, I know that PCLOS repos tend to lag those of other distros a bit in updating their software.  But that's not a complaint, because of the dozen or so Linux distros that I've used, I must say that PCLOS has been the most reliable and least buggy. I think PCLOS is the best distro out there, except perhaps for some esoteric specialized applications.

Many thanks to all for your feedback and ideas.

wine 64 bit is really good

do you have a specific reason to need adobe reader?

if not then okular should be enough, maybe foxit when is available for 64 bit too

about repos, every repo is equal so you only need one for main apps and one for megagames

in the particular case of 64 bit, being a testing version, afik, it is only using one repo
