[SOLVED] Ibiblio Puzzle
« on: February 10, 2013, 03:09:54 AM »
I keep a mirror of most of the repo locally, which keeps my download lower than if I did each install & upgrade individually.

I use Grsync for this and have a couple of alternate entries there.

I most often use Heanet to sync my local mirror.

I also keep an Ibiblio entry ...  in case Heanet goes off line or whatever.

Today I checked the Ibiblio entry, using the simulate mode. I was surprised to find that Ibiblio would have some updated packaged deleted and the older packages downloaded.

Here is a short excerpt

Quote

RPMS.kde/kio-recoll-1.18.1-1pclos2013.i586.rpm

I have highlighted three examples.

I wonder if someone else could check those results please and let me know if it is a problem at my end or if this problem can be duplicated.

I hope the problem is at my end ...

Thanks.

I just checked and the ibiblio server does seem to be behind heanet which I sync my local repo with.

Perhaps there were issues with these later versions and the devs have pulled them but I use recoll and have noticed no problems.

you should consider to switch away from Ibiblio because it will stop working at some time. There is a reason why it is no longer listed in our sources.list.  ;)

+1

Whereas I used to first check Ibiblio and then Heanet.ie and if the updates/new apps  didn't tally I would wait until Heanet.ie had "caught up" and only then do my updates.

I've recently got in the habit of doing the same but replacing Ibiblio with nluug.nl

As I mentioned, Ibiblio was only as a fall back.

Whether or not the later versions are actually on the Ibiblio server is really beside the point ........  the point is that the later packages would be removed and replaced by older packages.

This seems completely contrary to what I expect to happen ........  which is to show no updates available, and not to back down to older packages.

So my questions remain .....  has anyone else experienced Ibiblio wanting to downgrade packages?

Is this a problem here or on Ibiblio?

Thanks for checking  ;)

rsync checks file size and modification time to determine if a file is older and should be replaced. The version number in the file name plays no part therefore if the older version has been re-introduced or re-synced (is there such a word?) then there is a very good chance that one or both of these criteria for replacement would be met.

As pinoc tells us that ibiblio is soon to be no more then I will stick to heanet or one of the other European severs. The heanet server has mostly been good to me over the years.

Thanks!
I thought it took the name/number of the package into account.

I find that Heanet takes a while to respond to the rsync connection ...........  NLUUG is better in that regard.

When an older iso is installed, sometimes ibiblio is marked as the main repo server.
After first update, or manually select and install/update apt-sources-list from Synaptic, the sources list will be updated and ibiblio is no longer on this list.
The new 2013 iso's have already abandoned ibiblio in the package manager.
Evenso, ibiblio is no longer the main repo server, nluug it is ;) (I believe)
For me nluug is the fastest, but hey, I'm a Dutch PCLos user ;)

Rsync help:
Code: [Select]
rsync -avz -P --stats --delete-after \ftp.nluug.nl::pclinuxos/. \/media/YourDisk/PCLinuxOS/ Where "\/media/YourDisk/PCLinuxOS/" is your download map.
In this setup you get the complete repo including iso's, LibreOffice offline installer and much more, 88.4G
So, do not forget to use the exclude option or specify "\ftp.nluug.nl::pclinuxos/." to the maps you really need.

nnlug IS NOT the main repo server!, but it is a very very fast mirror.  The main repo server is not listed for a reason.

But nluug is, in my believe, (mostly) the first one synced for (not PASS) users ;)
