KDE power management misbehaving
« on: February 09, 2013, 02:08:07 PM »
I have a fully updated system running on a Dell Inspiron laptop. I frankly don't know whether this problem was there since day 1 or it appeared sometime later. The issue is that I have my KDE power management set to Sleep when power lid is closed both on AC and Battery modes. Occasionally, when the laptop is already in sleep mode and I change the state of AC adapter (either plug it in or unplug it) immediately before opening the lid, I get the following annoying sequence:
  • I log into my locked session and KDE is happily still running.
  • About 1-5 seconds later (long enough for me to start doing useful things in KDE), I get a KDE power management notification that the power adapter has changed states and the laptop goes to sleep
  • I then have to manually press the power button to wake up the laptop, log back in, and then everything is fine

This is not 100% reproducible which makes me think that I may be missing something from my documented sequence. Or perhaps there is a time consideration leading up to step 1. I honestly don't know. But this is starting to get frustrating. Any suggestions on where to look for clues on this problem? Or better still any suggestions on how to fix this?

Had something similar on a friends laptop which was cured by removing the battery and just running from the mains. Might be worth giving it a try to see if you get any change. If that is the problem then it appears to be a dead battery.

I know the battery is alive because I can run off it for hours and it charged in a reasonable time. This laptop (and the battery) is only a few months old

As I said it is worth trying even if it just eliminates that option.

I think I figured it out. The problem in my case was the sequencing of power management rules.  I stopped this annoying behavior by changing the "When laptop lid closed" under the "On Battery" profile from "Sleep" to "Turn off screen."
