Forum search / usefull answer??
« on: February 18, 2013, 09:29:43 PM »
In trying to search the forum before posting a question, I had this problem.....

(search)  install lxde over kde    ( I would like to use my kde install, but use the lxde DE.  I saw this mentioned in a forum as a possible setup that would work with an older system that might offer the functionality of kde, with the speed to lxde. There was no solution mentioned in the thread.)

results....

install(ing), install(ed), (un)install, (pre)install(ed), install(ation), install(er), (re)install(ing), (disc)over(ing), (disc)over(ed), over(come), (c)over(ed), (c)over(ing), and a plethora of mentions of kde with nothing to do with the search.

How would I better word the search request to get the answer I'm looking for?

There is no hard and fast rule for search. It depends on what has been posted on a subject. I try to think of words that will definitely exist in a discussion of my topic, then if there are too many responses, try words that will likely be in my topic but less likely to be in other topics (go -> more specific). Then, trial and error. I've often tried 5 or 6 combinations until I found what I was looking for.

Try task-lxde as the keyword.

One of the hits is this thread;

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

The text entry search box is a simplified search ......  it searches recursively from the location at which you do the search, and not the whole forum, and returns results for each search term, ---  or not and.

The search button brings you to a more complete search page with various options including limiting the search to certain sections and allowing for 'anding multiple terms (default I think).

I hope I have remembered that correctly  :D

One I find quite useful is to add the word solved to the search entry,

Another is if I know I saw a post sometime ago is to use the Message age: field.

e.g. Between 30days and 90days ago
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000
