Which distro and version to download?
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:43:36 PM »
Hi,

I'm downloading this version: pclinuxos64-kde-RC1.iso   but there are many in here: http://ftp-srv2.kddilabs.jp/Linux/packages/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/

May I know which version should I download for istallation on a partition?

Can someone give me the link to installation on partition?

Thanks!

The RC1 iso's are "Release Candidates" there maybe more of them before a final ISO is released for that version.

The MiniMe ISO is a very basic installation and should be used by more advanced users or those who know what files and programs they do or do not want to install.

The "fullmonty" is everything and the kitchen sink is included with the install with a customized desktops (6 I believe)

The KDE ISO is using the KDE4 desktop

The LXDE ISO is using the LXDE desktop

The LXDE mini is like Minime using the LXDE desktop instead of KDE4

You can install the KDE ISO on a 64 bit machine and it will run perfectly fine and with the use of a PAE enabled kernel, installable in synaptic, you will be able to access up to 64 gig of memory

I just downloaded the pclinuxos-kde-2013.02.iso .

So, in order to install it on the other partition, I just need to burn it into DVD and restart the computer and let it boot?

I can't see the boot by using the linux mint 14 iso. Hopefully this one will be fine.

What's the best practice to install PCLinuxOs on partition?

Thanks!

You can choose to run each iso you download in LiveCD and get the feel of each before you choose to install one. Boot the dvd and choose LiveCD (usually the default). Nothing gets installed during a LiveCD session. After you decide, just select the install icon on the desktop. That is where you can choose which partition to install it on. Those with more experience will be able to explain it better.

If you are trying to install it along with another distro, be careful because some distros used Grub 2 and PCLinuxOS used Grub Legacy.   A quick search on the forum should turn up information  about booting using Grub2 and Grub Legacy.  I do believe that Mint uses Grub 2.

As for installing it is really simple, there is an icon on the LiveCD desktop to click on to install.

Everything about the installation process is rather straight forward using the installer on the DVD. The only part that comes into contention is the use of either grub2 or legacy grub to control booting from the MBR. I would choose legacy grub over grub2, for the reasons stated here;

Sorry, I don't quite get what you mean.

Now i'm facing the same problem of booting the DVD. I don't see the "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD.."

What am I supposed to do?

I burn the DVD in my macbook. Shouldn't be a problem I guess?

Thanks!

Do you have booting from cdrom placed ahead of booting from the hard drive in BIOS?

Yes. I put CDRom as the first boot and then follow by Hard drive.

Is your "BIOS" actually a UEFI type?

Ok.. Sorry for the mess! ;)

I'm not too sure if it is UEFI. How can I check and what bios type should I have?

Thanks!

I think mine is just BIOS not UEFI.

I boosted the previous live DVD of PCLinuxOS without any problems.

Is it a relatively new computer? If it's a few years old, it is probably a legacy BIOS. If it's new, most factory motherboards these days have the UEFI replacement for the traditional BIOS. Knowing the make and model of a factory built system will give the information needed to Google the specs for the machine. If you built it yourself the motherboard manual should tell you what type BIOS/UEFI is being used.

I build all of my own machines, and have since 1998. My current one has a hybrid EFI/BIOS and chooses which to use based on hard drive size. 2 TB and under it uses the legacy BIOS. Over 2 TB it automatically switches to EFI. Unfortunately, the PCLinuxOS images produce a burned CD/DVD that will not boot on this machine, which is why I asked about yours.

My workaround is to use isohybrid from the syslinux applications to create a slightly modified version of the PCLinuxOS image, then use the dd command to write the modified image to a USB flash drive, and boot the image from that. It works the same as the burned DVD is supposed to, but without the optical drive being used.

If you have a flash drive available, you could do the same. You would then also have to place the USB-hdd entry before the hard drive in your BIOS boot order. My boot order is USB-hdd first, CDROM second, and HDD third. The actual titles for these devices varies slightly, with different BIOS, but you should be able to figure out which is which in your particular BIOS type.

I saw your last reply as I typed this, so add these questions;

Did you check the md5sum of the latest image after you downloaded it?

Did you burn the disk at the slowest speed possible?

Did you check the md5sum of the burned disk, after burning it?

It's few years old computer and it is BIOS.

I'm using MacBook to burn it and therefore it will verify the disk before completed the burning.

I'm not sure md5sum. Have no ideas about it. It is burning at the slowest speed.

I'm trying to use my thumbdrive to make a bootable usb drive by using this tool: http://rufus.akeo.ie/. What should i do with the following?

1. File System : FAT32, NTFS, exFAT
2. Cluser Size: default is 32KB.
2. Create a bootable boost using: MSDOS, FREEDOS, ISO Image

Thanks!
