« on: February 07, 2013, 03:27:39 PM »
Had a good day today, went on the local secondhand market and found a laptop for £25 uk.
advent 7095
celeron m 370 1.5 ghz
60 gig hd
512ddr upgradable to 1 gig
integrated sis graphics ::)
All in working order, battery time is only an hour.
Plays dvds and flash very well with xp ;D
Now the xp is going to be wiped,my question is ....
What flavor PClinuxOS?

I would go with lxde which should run like a dream on that spec of machine.

Thanks,i was thinking to go with a lighter version instead of full kde.
I have a few things to do with it yet,i'm going to strip it down and check cpu fan ect.
It has had a new keyboard fitted by some idiot, its bouncing all over the place, mic and headphone sockets don't work and a lot of screws are missing.
For the money it is a good buy and will be better when i have stripped it and rebuilt, also upgrade mem to 1 gig.i am surprised how fast it is considering its a celeron.

+1, upgrade to 1 GB ram if you can.     Look at my specs  below (LXDE).
ASUS EeePc 900HA netbook  1.6 Ghz Atom CPU  1GB RAM
160 GB internal HD    Seagate 250 GB USB portable drive
Intel ‎Mobile 945GSE Integrated Graphics Controller
Atheros AR242x/AR542x Wireless Network Adapter
Intel (N10/ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio
Dynex 5-Button Wired Optical Mouse

yes to the 1 gb of ram and kde4 32 bit or xfce, lxde is nice too

the problem i see is the sis card, you know that only intel, nvidia and amd has a reasonable support under linux, some sis work decently but others are a pita

Update memory and go for KDE is what I would do ...  (IF memory still can be found and is affordable)

I am slightly confused,i have tried full kde and minime and both do not work,i end up with a black screen and just the mouse pointer working, however, lxde works perfectly.

Another one to consider is RazorQT - it's lightweight and attractive.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Thanks menotu, will have a look and maybe give it a try although i'd rather stick with pclinuxos based os's.
Just waiting for a new battery, then i'm good to go.

Razor-Qt is just another desktop environment like KDE, LXDE or Xfce ;)
It can be installed on any version of PCLinuxOS...

Well, not really, not at the moment, because currently it is broken.
But it will soon :P

:-[ :-[ being a diehard KDE user i have not gone into other DE's so now is the time to have a look because this little laptop will gain with a lighter DE rather than KDE.
Thanks for that agmg,i was thinking razor was another OS.
