Control panel error
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:14:51 AM »
Control Panel/Hardware/Configure printers
This used to take me to a series of screens to install a new printer.
But now two green boxes containing a plus and a minus have appeared on this icon, and it will no longer open.
Any suggestions please?
I tried to insert a picture of it but can't figure out how.

As far as I know, there is no "Control panel" in PCLinuxOS unlike Windows where you do have one.
Here we have "Configure Your Desktop" which is also known as "System Settings" and "Configure Your Computer" also known as PCC or "PCLinuxOS Control Centre".
So which one are you referring to?

The forum does not have any attachment capabilities.
Please upload your image to an external image host and link it here.

I had that a few weeks ago.
I think it happens when some files are missing / deleted, possibly in various attempts at installing a printer. I could not find a way to solve it - had to reinstall from a live CD.
To test-  run a live CD.  It should show the correct -PCLinuxOS Control center -hardware -printing and scanning icon.  You should then be able to install the printer.
you can then install from the live CD, or better, from the install icon.  You may, or may not lose all your customizations/settings, and you may have to reinstall the printer again.

Having to re-install from a live CD is a chore.
It can take 20 - 30 mins.  But in W.. allow hours!

That idea of doing the configuring from a live CD seems brilliant. I will try that next.
By the way I have tried to get a photo onto the reply, and have opened a flickr account with just one photo in it, but I have no idea what to do next, I have never used flickr before, and there are no teenagers in the house to ask.

???  looks like a icon from Mandriva/Rosa/Mageia Linux Control Center.

Configure printer and scanning looks like this: http://linuxlibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/pclinuxos-2012-kde-7.jpg

Which version of PCLinuxOS are you running? FullMonty / KDE / MiniMe ?

You may need to install task-printing.

Other advice gleaned from the site and repeating some of above,
these may not be the problem but are easy to check.

1.    In Synaptic, check if "task-printing" is installed.
      (Install if not)
2.    In  PC Control Center, "System," "Manage system services"
check if CUPS deamon is enabled.  Check next to CUPS if not.
(A reboot may be necessary if changed)
3.    If you are using a USB printer, turn it off and turn it on again.
On some distros an automatic setup of the printer gets triggered.

Thanks to all of you for your feebdack on this. Just a few points:
1. Installing a printer from the live CD only works if you carry on using the live CD; the settings are not there when you log back on normally.
2. I have just installed 'task-printing' successfully. I've no idea what it does for me (can't call it up from the command line) but coincidence or not, those green boxes on top of the icon in Control Panel/Hardware/Configure Printers have now vanished and I can open the thing up again, so great! I seem to be there now.
Thanks to all of you.
