[Solved:] Dropbox Error
« on: February 06, 2013, 08:42:59 PM »
Hi,

When I try to install dropbox through synaptic, I get the message:

"Dropbox is running from an unsupported location. Please visit http://www.dropbox.com/install to download and install the latest version."

I then have the option of "Don't Ask Again" or "Install Dropbox Correctly".

If I click Don't Ask Again, and try to login, it tells me "This account uses two-step verification. To link to it, please download the latest version of Dropbox from www.dropbox.com/download."

This is correct, as I do use two step verification. Any way to fix this or do I need to recompile from source and install the newest copy direct from the site?

Thanks!

Trying to reproduce your problem, I enabled two-step verification for my Dropbox account and select the "text messages" option.

Installed Dropbox on one of my test VM installations (KDE MiniME 2013.02 32bit).
First time I run the client I received the error message but selected "Don't ask again".
Continuing with the configuration, I entered my credentials

Next, I got the 6-digit code on my cell phone to verify my account.

Dropbox folder created and my machine was linked to my account successfully.

I selected only one folder for sync and finished the installation.

After that, the client begun syncing my files.

I don't see any problems on my side.  :-\

Perhaps the difference is that I have the "google authenticator" program rather than text messaging? In either case...I'm still getting the same error....

Did you try with the "text message" option and didn't work?

Is that a new installation? What version of PCLinuxOS do you have installed and what is your Dropbox version?

Did you link that computer with Dropbox in some other time?
If yes, you could try unlinking it first from Dropbox's website and start the procedure from the beginning.

I'm out of ideas at the moment...  :-\

Hi,

I didn't try the text message option...I have a lot of computers linked through dropbox and kind of don't want to fiddle with that one.

As for the install:

1) Install is old -- Computer was off for a while during remodel. Booted it yesterday -> did all updates through synaptic.
2) Dropbox version installed -> 1.4.9.1-pclos2012 (that comes up as the "latest version" too).
3) I had this computer linked with dropbox but after such a long time being off (4 months!), I uninstalled dropbox and then did "rm -rf .dropbox"
4) My kernel is 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs
5) I tried unlinking through dropbox. Same error

:-(

Well, lets take it one by one.

First of all, your Dropbox version is outdated. Latest version in repos is 1.6.10.

Second, did you keep updating your system over those 4 months?
I guess not, because if your system was up-to-date, you could see the above mentioned version.

Please read the following thread carefully:

to update your sources.list and properly update your system.

You were right. I was pulling from old repos. It was a bit to time consuming to update from something so sold so I just reinstalled PCLOS while keeping \home intact. Dropbox now works. Thank you for your help.
