knives... need advice... Rudge?
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:20:25 PM »
Rudge... that newest knife you bought looks nice.

I don't own any revolver or rifle.  But I was thinking of a couple of quality knives... not for making meals.

What is a good recommendation?

Sammy, what are you wanting the knife to do?

You don't buy a shotgun for deer hunting.

You also don't buy an EDC blade for skinning a squirrel.

;)

If you are looking at a knife for defensive purposes, you are asking the wrong guy.

No no.

I'd like one knife for general purposes.  Like Jed Clampet... wilting.  Or cutting something hard to open.  BUT that knife should not dull after some 10 to 12 cuts.

A second knife to be a bit of a hunting knife...  Camping or in the wilderness...  For self-defense against some critter.

Used to do alot of camping where there was no electricity.  Be thinking that this coming summer, I might want to get back to that.

drop point is what I have heard for general purpose..... if you need kitchen knives, totally different. Each kitchen knife has a certain purpose. I would not go for something that looks good. Fixed blade is important at some point. Rudge will know more.

Sammy, Kershaw makes a line of knives that sound just perfect for you.

I would recommend that you get both.

Check out both of these knives.

First, a "Corral Creek" small, easy to carry perfect for peeling an apple or whittling on some wood. Open a box or clean your nails.

http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-3115-00-Corral-Creek-Knife/dp/B000FU2LOS/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_3

Next, a "Wild Cat Ridge". HUGE knife. Same design but this is a serious hunting knife. You could easily field dress a deer with this knife.

http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-3140-00-Wildcat-Ridge-Knife/dp/B000FU4I4Y

Both of them come in "8cr13mov" steel.

That steel is corrosion resistant, easy to sharpen and stays sharp for a really long time. ;)

EDIT: looks like the Wildcat Ridge actually comes now with an even better steel. "AUS6A" will stay sharp for even longer. It's a bit harder to sharpen.

Also,, look for the best prices, don't just buy from my links. Both of these knives can be had for less. I own both knives and they rock. ;)

Apologies for butting in, but it's hard to beat this for what you seem to have in mind. I have one I use backpacking the Appalachian Trail and general camping use. I like it so much I gave my son one for Christmas.
Extremely lightweight, extremely sharp, and high quality steel; easy to sharpen.

I am having problems figuring out what steel they are using. Any idea what the blade is made out of?

I think Sammy is looking for a known quality, not just a recommendation.

Sorry for being a jack @ss but I know 8cr13mov steel is good and KAI makes quality knives.

Sammy, Are you wanting a folder for the " general purposes" knife ? Lots to choose from. Mostly depends on how much you want to spend. D2 holds a pretty good edge but can be time consuming to resharpen sometimes. a good general purpose steel for "everyday" light to moderate use would be 440C, Good corrosion resistance and holds a decent edge, as long as you're not cutting cardboard for any length of time. 154CM (ATS 34) or AUS 8A would be a good mid priced choice. also, they make specific knifes wood carving (whittling) if you so desire.

A fixed blade is the only way to go for your outdoors hunting ,camping, self-defense against some critter knife ;D (good luck with that), although the latter would serve you better if it was on the end of a 6ft pole. Again it depends what you want to spend and really do with it. You might consider a small camp axe or belt axe in conjunction with a skinner type knife, something with a good belly to it.
All things said you can do a lot of small knife stuff with a big knife but it can be really hard to do big knife stuff with a small knife.

what a belt axe might look like

really does depend on your budget

Maybe in N. C. Lot of states don't allow rifle for deer ;D ;D
(Was told I could use a .300 Win Mag for coyotes though  ::))

weirdwolf has recommended some serious knives but if you are going to pay that much for a knife, I could think of some things I would rathor have. ;)
